I am thinking that in the long term, I would feel more confident about my car (56 Dodge D500 hemi) if the transmission was a three speed Torqueflite rather than a 2 spd PowerFlite. Just thinking.
I know that it has been done (Dave H. has done it).
One of the biggest impediments to a successful conversion is acquiring the push button box from a 57 Dodge truck which was equipped with a "LoadFlite" 3 spd automatic transmission. On these lines of thought, I searched out and found the 50-65 Mopar Parts Interchange document. While I didn't find the control box, I did find the cross-over for the actual truck transmission: it was the same as the 1733 290 transmission used in the 57/58 New Yorkers and 58 Imperial. Heavy powerful cars, makes sense that the 1/2 ton truck trans could be the same.
Some info from today's search:

Call off the dogs.
I scored a NOS 1673 906 TorqueFlite control mechanism for a 56 Chrysler/Imperial from my local NOS Mopar parts guy. I also lucked into a 5 button control panel and buttons on eBay and snagged it on a Buy it Now. (See photos below). At least that hurdle is crossed if I decide to go Torqueflite for sure (lots of confusing options have been presented for my consideration).
Note the buttons are not in the correct position in the photo.

Thanks Marc. I got my NOS shifter mechanism *with* a reverse light switch for less than that sand-blasted one *AND* I got an un-pitted shifter plate *AND* all five buttons for less than the price of just that pitted plate. Admittedly, I did not get the felt gasket (OH NOZE !!)
From Marc's ebay links (I saw them before I bought what I bought):
