Location: Lower Mainland BC | Before Christmas, I was lucky enough to find and buy a 1673 906 Torqueflite shifter box from my NOS parts guy, Ron W. (local to me). Ron also let me borrow another shifter to see if I could figure out what it came off of. I can't.  The main reason is a very strange shifter pattern as you will see.
What I know is that shifter cable connects the shifter box and the transmission. From what I know (read), the shift pattern for the early Torqueflites is R-N-D-2-1, as shown in one of the photos below (borrowed from the 300 club website).
I picked up a 1705 370 shifter plate with its five shift buttons today (bought on eBay before Christmas). With the shifter plate and the buttons, I was then able to check to see if the 1673 906 shifts in the normal fashion and/or whether the Unknown "305" was the same or different.
The answer, as shown in the photos below, is the NOS 1673 906 shifts normally, i.e. R-N-D-2-1 where R pushes the cable furthest towards the transmission and 1-pulls the cable away from the transmission the most. I don't know what is going on with the "305" but it has a reverse pattern, i.e. R-N-1-2-D where R pushes the cable furthest towards the transmission and D pulls the cable away from the transmission the most. I have no idea what Mopar Transmission works like that.
Hence the question: Anybody know where the unknown "305" shifter belongs in the world of Mopars Or ??? (maybe it isn't for a Mopar at all). (Ron sometimes bought boxes and boxes of unlabeled parts for a decent price - not necessarily knowing where they applied.
The photos from today (Note: I did the same five steps and 10 photos for each of the two shifters but I've elimated the 1 and 2 shift positions for the "305"

Location: Pau, S-W France | Maybe the "305" is for another shifter plate so when you install your shifter plate on it you have the buttons at wrong location ? The Imperial have a different shifter plate with vertical buttons. In 57/58 the buttons are from top to bottom: NDR21 but they change in 1959: DNR21. When i take a look at '59 parts manual i note different parts number for the shifter box, at least two numbers in 1959: 1737 090 (so a '57 part) and for Imperial 1945857. And from 56 to 58 there are 4 different part numbers !

Location: northern germany | That's crazy. Live and learn. Never saw or heard about a different style 3 speed shifter mechanism before! I wonder why there are 2 different designs!
Just read the OP again, I'm not 100% sure, but I believe the "305" is the regular version (at least on all 60/61s) and the "906" the weird one.

Location: Lower Mainland BC | Thanks for the reply Phil. Anything is possible with that "305". All I know is when I use a 56 TF faceplate and put the buttons in the "normal" 56/57 positions, the "D" pulls the cable all the way back.
Thanks for letting my borrow/steal that TF shifter comb photo. It helped me figure out how the shifters worked.
Also: Please check your americasud emails. I sent a TF/PF question for you before Christmas (Dec. 22) - you might have missed it.
As for the 1673 906 TF shifter box, it is listed as the TF shifter for all Mopars in 1956 even though we now know only late Imperials and Chryslers (maybe only the 300s) actually got the TFs in 1956.

Location: Lower Mainland BC | Found an example (63 Dodge Dart) with the buttons arranged vertically but, in the end, they go through a normal looking push button mechanism. Must have been fun designing those buttons (and their extensions and connections to the shifter mechanism):
