Does anybody know what was the standard 3 speed manual transmission used between 1957 and 1959? I have 1958 Dodge and 1959 Plymouth factory service manuals, both show the same trans but neither gives any detail about who manufactured it or what model it was. Was it a Chrysler transmission? Or a Borg Warner? Something else? Details appreciated.

One PN that I pulled up for a pretty heavy duty 1958 3 spd manual was 1738 232. Searching on that number turned up this thread from 2007 that might contain your answer:

Good luck

A lot of speculation and contraction in that thread. Here's what I can find

A745 - used with V8s from 1961 to 1971
Borg Warner T87 - Used in rear wheel drive trucks from 1955 to 1972 (so this could be a possibility, can't find much on them)
A903 - used with 6 cylinders from 1960 to 1972
A230 - came much later

To me, the 3 speeds used in Dodge and Plymouth cars from '57 to '59 appear to look most like the Borg Warner T85, but the trans case doesn't have any identifying numbers that BW transmissions usually have? Still unknown.

I am not sure but I believe the 3 speed manual used in 57 -59 was built by Chrysler, possibly New Process. There were 2 versions, one slightly heavier than the other for 58-59 but none of them were very strong. I think I broke at least 4 of them in my 57 Fury. (couldn't have been my driving) The BW T-85 was much stronger but not used by Chrysler until 60. They were also made with overdrive but only used behind 6 cyl. and small V-8s I believe only in Plymouth and maybe some Dodges.

I tried for a long time to find a numeric designation for the '57-'58 manual transmissions and never found anything.
