Location: Victoria Australia | Hi Guys, anyone know were I can get a standard 3.00 ratio crown and pinion for a 1961 Chrysler Newport sedan please?

Says he has a crown and pinion at a ratio of 3.1?.1
Was hopeing to keep it as was but from the info I have received it does not look like the original ratio is available.
Will ask him for the price of his and also take a better look at the housing to determine which is it that I have. |

Location: Alaska | What are the numbers cast into the housing? they might end in 657 or 741 if an open rear or 742 if limited slip. The pinion size is different depending on which one, 1 3/8" if open and 1 3/4" if limited slip. |

Have checked specs for the Newport and the ratio should be 2.93. Close to the 2.94 you mentioned earlier. |

No 3.00 ever available in an 8 3/4" but there was a 3.18 in the fifties, probably a good choice. |

Location: So. Cal | There was also a 3.15:1 in the early days of the 8 3/4. In the states, it is usually cheaper to just get a used third member with the gear ratio you want in it. I've never had issues running a *clean* used chunk. |

Location: Alaska | Alex, I was working from memory. The ratio may be 2.93 not 2.94 any way ,I have one in limited slip but plan on using it, sorry. There was also a ratio around 2.73 which would be great for cruising. |

Location: Victoria Australia | Not a problem 58 coupe, thanks anyway. Ok, mine is a 8 3/4, not sure on case yet and 2.93 ratio. He has a good second 3.23 from a Plymoth which he wants to put in.
Would I notice much difference going from a 2.93 to a 3.23 on the road? |

Location: Pacific Northwest | Short answer is no. You might notice a little more get up and go from a start and the gas mileage will suffer, ever so slightly on long distance hiway rides. The engine will be working a bit harder the faster you go. Someone here can do the math for you, im sure. Depending on your tires size lets say your engine was spinning 2200 rpms @ 60mph. The 3:23 will be making the engine spin around 2400rpms @ 60mph. (This is just an example and no math was made) |

Both ratios were used in the 8 3/4"; 2.93 is earlier with a 41-14 tooth count while 2.94 is later with a 47-16 tooth count. |
