In my first post I asked if anyone had successfully recreated the gold coating in the center of the knobs. One reply suggested trying Krylon Stained Glass paint, Canary Yellow. (thanks Mike) After procuring not only the Canary Yellow but also the Tangerine Orange, I did some tests on some old window crank handles.
Here are some pictures of these tests.
First pic is an original untouched knob.
Pic 2 is the cans of paint
Pic 3 is 4 light coats of each color on each end.
pic 4 is a close up of the Canary Yellow
Pic 5 is a close up of the Tangerine Orange
I didn't really like the looks of either color, the Yellow looked more green and the Orange looked more copper color.
I decided to experiment a little.
Pic 6 is another handle with multiple coats.
Pic 7 was with 3 coats of Orange then 3 coats of Yellow. This produced a more Gold color.
Pic 8 was 3 coats of Yellow and then 3 coats of orange. This produced a greenish tint, similar to the original Canary Yellow.
Pic 9 & 10 are close ups of the Orange then Yellow. Nice Gold color.
Pic 11 & 12 are close ups of the Yellow then Orange.
I'm leaning more towards the Orange then Yellow which produced a nice Gold color.
What do you think?? I hope this helps someone attempting to recreate these items/colors.
Bob

I was also wondering how to replicate the knob colours, when I get that far in my resto...looks good! I think the orange-yellow combination looks best, as far as I can see on my monitor.

Another Update!
After my experiments and coming to the conclusion that I liked the look of the Orange and Yellow, creating a nice Gold color, I decided to see how durable this stuff is. Unfortunately it scratches right off. SOOO, I decided to experiment some more. After trying several combinations, I hit on the correct procedures;
Clean off the old coating with 0000 steel wool and lacquer thinner. Most will come right off and other spots will take some time.
Clean the area to be coated with a good wax, grease remover. I use Pre-Kleeno 900
Carefully tape off everything but the center of the knob needing recoating.
Use a good automotive 2 part clear coat and shoot 2 light coats on the knob. I use PPG Concept DCU-2021, DCX-61 hardener and DT-860 reducer. Mix as directed at 4-1-1. I used my airbrush for the clear coatings.
Before the clear coat dries, apply the color. I waited only 30 minutes.
Shoot 3 light coats of Orange, waiting 2 minutes between coats.
Shoot 3 light coats of Yellow, waiting 2 minutes between coats.
Wait 10 minutes and shoot 2-3 very light coats of clear coat waiting 10 minutes between coats.
In about 1 hour CAREFULLY remove the tape.
After your coatings dry, at least 24 hours, you will now have a very durable and beautiful coating on your knobs.
NOTE'S:
Do NOT use your typical spray cans of clear coat. They are too soft and WILL scratch quite easily. I tried DupliColor and Krylon.
Do NOT apply anything but very light coats. My knobs taper down in the center and anything more than very light coats will "puddle" into the center. This is NOT good!
The quality of the chrome will dictate how nice your knobs looks after the coatings. Out of all my knobs, none of the chrome
was perfect to start with. Some of the chrome was a little "duller" looking, but only in spots. This WILL show after the coatings.
In my opinion, the completed knobs probably look better than they did when new. It appears that even the one NOS knob that I have, has blemishes from the factory.
As with ANY 2 part paints/clear coats, wear a good respirator and have good ventilation.
Hope this helps and saves someone some time and effort.
Bob

I didn't take pictures before installation, so this is what they look like installed. The single wiper knob was one of two that I did. This one didn't come out as nice, so it's now a spare.
The ignition switch cover I may redo since the clear appears heavier. It's not as good of chrome as the knobs, (the knobs are die-cast and the cover is stamped tin) so the final results look a little different.

They look really good. Some of the originals often fade to a darker color over time so it's good to be able to make them all the same color.
