Location: SE Arizona | I've had this idea bouncing around for a few days now and thought I'd throw it up here for comments and further sugestions. Has anybody besides me ever considered doing an early 60s style mild custom with a 57-58 Plymouth? Unfortunatly I'm a little far along and comitted to what I'm doing with my 57 to make any major changes at this point but kind of thought I'd see what peoples reaction would be. YOu never know I may pick up another 57-8 just to try it.
The 60's mild customs generally consisted of milder touches than the full blown 50s customs had done to them so I'm thinking if a guy could find the right pats it would be almost bolt in. Her's what I've come up with so far:
Nose and deck it (basically remove the front hood/trunk emblem/letters and either remove the exterior trunk lock completly and go with a cable or electric inside release.
Removal of the rear fender modle name plates.
Tubular grill and the same treatment on a 58 lower valance.
Instead of shaving the exterior door handles use door handles from a 57-8 Dodge.
Dual rear antenas and dual mirrors.
Complete dash change to a 57-58 Dodge dash (it's a bolt in and I always loved the ribbon speedometer and flip around ash tray)
4 bucket seat interior (preferably swivel buckets) from an early 60's chrysler.
A bright candy apple paint job and chrome reverse wheels with baby moon caps.
Any other thoughts or comments? Good or bad idea? Other mods?

Location: NE Florida | Yeah...I thought about doing that to my '57 at first, too...but I guess I'm more of one of those despised, traditional 'rat rodder' types...I was gonna slam mine...tinted glass... trim-rings with moons on stock steelies and wide whites...smoothed emblems, with only the "V" and a single spear...shaved handles...tubular grille...shot all over with black suede or satin JD Blitz Black....but, I've got a '62 F**d 2-door Falcon station wagon with a 302 already going in that direction, so I guess I'll keep my FL baby closer to stock...maybe "Christine" it instead...

Should I assume this is also your Silver Special? And here's a few more pics of customs (the Fury and 2dr Dodge wagon aren't hardcore customs or anything, but one is lowered and the other has mags ) for anyone that's interested...

Location: northern germany | i LOVE the plodge! all it needs is a lowering job and skirts. the 56 plymouth is my kind of kustom (except the color) clean low with spinners, whitewalls and cruiser skirts. i love it. i like that beige 58 too except for the antennas and chromed radiator support that shines thru the grill. that looks ugly. should be flat black. |

Location: DFW, TX | I'm really hoping someone knows something about this '58 Plymouth.
This photo was taken at Watson's in CA in the very late '50s. This was still a brand-new car. I haven't seen another '58 done quite like this, and just based on these miniscule pictures, I think it's one of the better looking custom '57-58s I've seen. Does anyone have any additional pictures of this machine?
BTW, based on the grille emblem, it looks like a six-cylinder!!

Yep, last time I checked, I'm in Texas. That is Paso John's car, he emailed me a few shots of it. Here's the ones I had not yet posted. And I'm not sure what HCPU is.
Also, I believe this is Lou's Silver Special.

Location: Orlando Florida | WOW!!! It`s nice to see both my cars in the same place. Like I did at Turkey Run. I seen the orange wagon Saturday afternoon. I parked next to it. What a picture....PRICELESS!!!! Too bad I didn`t have a camera with me. I`m going to be selling the "Green Machine" Silver Special soon. I`m gathering up money to buy the wagon back. I`m detailing the engine as we speak. It`s the same color as the wheels. I`ll get pictures over the weekend. If anybody is interested, motor, trans, rear has 18,000 miles on it. I posted it in the for sale section. |

My Silver Special is mild custom. I built it ten years ago. I`ll get a pic of it today but for now check out my old 59 Dodge.
I've seen that Dodge long-roof before - At Old Town in Orlando when I used to live down there.
It's very cool.

It s not authentic looking if that is the rite word for it,looking at the correct picture ,but I still have oodles of fun.BTW non car people don t know any better, they just see COOL and they love it.This car is a driver and very dependable.Ploy 318,1960 Dodge wagon brakes up front and 74 Challanger rear end.It s cool to see a nostolgic stock car on the road.We have Cruisin The Coast down here and over the years I have seen about three other old stock cars, hopefully we may get another trend started.Charlie

Location: Lemoore CA | I have a really great idea for a subtle custom I want to make out of an old 58 2 door hardtop Plymouth I have sitting out back, first things first, I am going to strip off the gold annodizing on the grill and some other parts, and have them redone silver, then I am going to shave some trim, I am going to remove the checkmark and just leave the top spear down the side, I think I will also remove the scripts, they say something weird like furry or fury, some kind of nonsense, and replace them with fancy belvedere scripts. Next I am going to do a radical body mod that when finished will appear subtle, I am going to cut the doors down a few inches and add some metal behind it to create a pillar that goes from the roof to the floor, and then I am going to add a second door on both sides behind the front doors. When the body work is done, I am going to strip the remaining paint, it's an ugly color kind of an off white, and go with something nice, mabeye a blue. After the cosmetics are done I am going to pull the 2 four barrel, gas guzzeling engine, and automatic transmission, I hope I will be able to find a kid I can pay to haul it to the dump, and replace it with a nice 6 cylinder with a 3 speed, it is very important to me to get that sporty look, so I think that instead of a colum shifter I will add a floor shifter. This is really going to be some car, I think it will really stand out among all other 58 Plymouths, and when people look at it they will say, "Thats the way they should have come from the factory". All kidding aside, I really like well done foreward look customs, but for the most part, I think most Foreward looks are as close to perfect as you can get in a factory car. |

I'm glad there seems to be some increasing interest in these cars as customs. They really do have better lines than their peers, and the only thing that compares are the cars that were designed to compete against them - the '59-61 GM hardtops. Everything else pales.

Location: Lemoore CA | Danny, a couple posts back you posted a picture of a cream orange Dodge Polara, with a Chrysler front clip, I don't care for the top chop, but that sure does make a pretty neat looking car otherwise, I wonder what my 62 Newport would look like with mabeye a reverse of that, for some reason I have always liked the front end of the first Dodge 880. Anyhow, I am seriously considering a mild custom with my 62 if I keep it. |

Frostbite! Would you believe this is what ultimately happened to that car? It's still a custom

Location: So. Cal | Thanks, I like it too. I've been thinking about what the '61 Imperial needs to look good. It has so much potential, but misses the mark. I think that if I owned one, I would do something like this: split the grille and hide the sides of the headlights with some good sized bumper wings. I think this could look much better than the stock version.

It would be interesting to see what a 1960 Phoenix would look like if the fins still ran the same length but were more prominent height wise. Love those fins! |
