The other day somebody was mentioning that they had leakage from their PS pump (probably an Eaton) that was attached to the back of their generator. I didn't have an answer then so followed some other pretty butterfly. For some reason, I remembered today and since I also have an Eaton pump at the back of my generator and there is leakage (somewhere), I decided to pursue the solution.

I think that I have determined that the seal seems to be a 1408 732 which would make it a 1954 part (??). When I chase 1408 732 with the aid of Google (as "1408732 shaft seal"), one hit was Rock Auto which calls it out as a 1954 Chrysler part (hence the 14 in the PN). Rock Auto suggests two options, Timken or National, both 6835S, 1.25" OD, 0.75" ID. It's just a seal so changing it shouldn't be a big deal. I will probably do that and see if it stops my leak.

Hope this helps whoever posted about their leak (I looked for but didn't find the original post)

EDIT: I just chased the 6835S seals with my local FLAPS (Lordco) and they crossed that to a SFK 7440 (see below)

That would be me.  My Eaton PS pump has developed s leak at the front of the pump where it attaches to the generator.  Thanks for all the reserch and pump diagram and seal numbers

I'll order the seal this weekend.  It looks fairly straight forward to replace.  BTW, what fluid is avaiable to use with these Eaton PS pumps. Ths shop manual says 10W Oil or Type "A" Oil (what ever that is) Can regular off the shelf PS fluid or ATF (Track Auto, NAPA. etc.) be used? I am concerned that PS or ATF fluid is too thin and might cause future leaks down the road

The pump, hoses and coxial steering box are covered with years of grime. Not looking forward to draining the fluid out of the system but at least now with the new seal it should hopefully stay clean.

"Type A" was one of the automatic transmission fluids available back in the day. I think that translates to Type III Dextron now. That's what I am running in my PS pump.

Everytime I happen to take my 56 Dodge to a coil-operated wand-type car wash to clean the underside of the car (I hand rinse the exterior at home), I "inadvertently" (oops) open the hood and spray my coaxial PS box and the surrounding area. I have also been under the car doing something else, e.g. replacing the neutral starter switch, as taken the opportunity to wipe things with paper towels and solvent. Slowly slowly I am winning. The photo below shows the coaxial PS box as of a few minutes ago. Obviously I need to get that pressure wand in there a bit more.

As for Type A and substitutes, including off-the-shelf PS fluid, have a read on the text below from a Thunderbird website regarding 55-57 T-birds.

(PS: I hate when I take and post photos and realize that something that I thought was pretty clean is, in fact, still dirty. )

I do like the '56 style reservoir better with the screw top.  The "55 reservoir with it's clamp on top is kind of a pain to remove just to check the fluid, especially when it's HOT! Thanks again for the good information.

Picked up an SKF 7440 shaft seal this AM. Looks so cute.

I think that I will use a wood screw and pliers (and/or screw driver) to pry out the old seal and then a 1/2" drive socket (1 1/8" I think) to drive the new one into the housing. I plan to do this *ON* the engine, without disconnecting any hoses (but probably draining the reservoir before removing the seal). We'll see. Be nice to eliminate the seepage.
