Location: The Bat Cave, Fairborn, OH | Man! Charles Phoenix has outdone himself in his enthusiam for this 1960 Plymouth Fury. Too bad he didn't give more detail about the car's unusual history. I guess it was somebody's favorite car, and when he/she passed away in 1967, a relative put it into a tomb to preserve it as a memorial to the person who had died. Evidentially it was in the tomb until 2002 when it was reprieved. |

Location: Parts Unknown | Chas works the neo-MCM scene as a business, and thusly wears "stage clothing"
that catches the audience's eye. Much like over-the-top pink Cadillacs, checkerboard
tile floors, car couches, and gas pumps in your living room .... the "American
Grafitti" mentality on all things 50's takes what was ordinary living and style and
hypes it into a sugar-buzzed version of the original ideas.
I am not saying I agree with it. Just explaining it .....

Absolutely NOBODY into MCM and REALLY into the 50s wears tasteless flourescent orange and yellow or has car couches. Car couches are not "50s" and purely an 80s Yuppi and also a hillbilly thing. Some idiotic tasteless wannabes think these are cool. American Grafitti is a great movie and got nothing to do with it. |

Location: Parts Unknown | Well, Sid .... come to America and seek out the "50's Culture" crowd, and
you will invariably find the Charles Phoenix people who take the 50's idea to
"another level". American Grafitti set a ball rolling in the U.S. (maybe elsewhere?)
of a teen nostalgia for the 50's. Not an adult, doctor/lawyer/banker nostalgia,
but a specific teen nostalgia, which an awful lot of people locked on to, and since
have held a heavy presence in the "50's scene". I would submit that the same
paradigm that locked onto the teen nostalgia is often the crew that likes the
checkerboard floors and car couches.
I am not here to argue this .... I actually agree with you, and do not like the
reality, as it exists ... the contrived, pseudo-50's stuff. But these people DO
occupy a large slice of the American "50's scene". Just go to ANY "Lost In The
50's" car show and you'll get a heavy dose of it.
To quote Charles Phoenix: Yeah, I KNOW ! |

Back in 2010 I was asked to bring my Big-Tailed Beast to a show sponsored by the Denver Art Museum which was dedicated to the American art form as represented by the automobile. Phoenix was the guest host for the show and even back then he was really into '60 Furys. Since mine has the SonoRamic Commando, "Aero" steering wheel, and swivel seats, he was obviously impressed and awarded it a blue ribbon. He also liked the idea that I had a similar car back in 1960-1964 and could regale him with war stories of flirting with girls, drag racing, more than an occasional stop light Grand Prix, and other "cool" stuff. Of course, it didn't hurt that Mrs. Godec was on hand, though she disputed my contention that I was "Joe Cool."
I think the thing that really set him off was when I told him about my buddy down in Pueblo who said when I showed him my newly acquired (second) '60 Fury back in 2000, "Ya know, Joe, we didn't have to see 'American Graffiti;' we lived it!" It's been fun trying to return to the days of my misspent youth.

Location: Parts Unknown | I had a car friend years ago that was 14 in 1956, and told this very amusing story
about his aunt buying a new 56 BelAir 2HT in that chartruese color they had that year
and cream. He was still beaming over how he loved that car, 35 years later. It was
all about the styling to him. He was just so impressed with how beautiful that car was.
He said that he'd sit in the barn where she kept it and stare at it for hours, walking around
it and examining every detail. He wasn't a Chevy guy at all, but his "glow" for that car
and that time could make anyone not there really feel what those times meant for some
people.
That 1956 fourteen-year-old was 18 in 1960 and surely lived the teenage angst angle
of the American Graffiti story. He was very genuine in his nostalgia for the time, fully
acknowledging that his adolescent paradigm was just that, and that his parents and
other older family members lived in a parallel universe of jobs and power bills and
parenting responsibility. But he had plenty of good stories about that stuff too. It
truly was a magical time to be a kid. |

After all Joe, she stuck with you almost 60 years! Merry Christmas to you. |

Naw, she said (when I had the CURRENT Big-Tailed Beast delivered in 2000), "I thought it was ugly when it was new and I think it's ugly now!" I had my first '65 Sport Fury when I started dating her in 1965. She liked the '65, 426-S, 4-speed, no PS or AC, and all -- and not bad at a speed shift with that heavy duty clutch even in high heels.

Location: northern germany | Yes, I was just assuming she meant your BTB, as I can't imagine that a woman remembers a certain car model 40 years later! So at least the 60 made a lasting impression.....unless she meant finned cars in general. |

Location: The Bat Cave, Fairborn, OH | Paul Hettick - 2019-12-31 5:30 PM He owns it. Really? That would make sense then. In other videos I've seen that he's made there usually is a driver/owner of the car he is drooling over on camera. In the one video of the 1960 plymouth its just him on camera. No excuses then for him not offering up an engine bay shot nor expanding on the car's remarkable previous history. Here's a video of him gushing over a 1960 Edsel Villager 6 passenger wagon. The owner seems to be into orphan cars as he's got a pretty sweet 1959-60 Rambler next to his Edsel in his driveway. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9c80OHW0vSo

From what I heard he owns several FLs. There is a video on YT of a (PERFECT!) 58 Desoto coupe he bought (he calls it a 59...). He also owns, or owned a 59 Dodge convertible.

Location: northern germany | A 30K miles senior 58 Desoto coupe! It doesn't get much better than this. I didn't even know that car exists. I don't remember anybody here mentioning it. Usually such cars fall into the hands of radical customizers that leave nothing 50s on it. Like him or not, I'm glad Phoenix got it. |

Location: The Bat Cave, Fairborn, OH | Charles had his pick then of vintage tin from the 50s and 60s. What's more, they would have been Southern Calfornia cars with limited rust on the bodies. It doesn't get better than that. |
