So my 56 Plaza has the 3 speed with the Borg Warner R10G overdrive, and while I’m not certain, I believe this is the original factory installed trans. I recently purchased another overdrive transmission, claimed to be from a 56 Plymouth, but the part numbers are giving me doubts.

Hopefully someone here has access to parts books and can help clear this up.

Original trans:
Gearbox is part number 1633759-4
Overdrive is part number R10G-1B

eBay trans:
Gearbox is part number 1408517-9
Overdrive is part number R10G-1

The solenoid that came on the eBay trans is part number 1118155, and Google says that this is a 6 volt solenoid and incorrect for the 12 volt system used in 56. And yes, I’m aware that a 12 volt solenoid is a direct bolt in.

I purchased the eBay trans to have as a spare or for parts, but I would like to know what it actually was originally installed in. And, would anyone know if this eBay trans would bolt directly to the 270 Poly in my Plaza?

Any insight would be appreciated!

Not sure if this will help you or not. Be aware that the numbers on the transmission case castings are very likely *NOT* the PN of the transmission. What is clear is while there is differences flagged between models, I don't think that there are differences between 6 cyl and V8 engines, at least not in 55-56.

Hope you can figure it out.

My understanding is that OD transmissions were different in the '57-'59 Plymouth's. Never seen an OD in other Mopar makes except maybe a truck. I've found 2 complete Transmission's in Plymouths. 1 in a '57 2dr Flathead Sub and the other in a '58 V-8 Sub. I bought another trans that came out of a '59 Plymouth Sub. I'm installing 1 in my '59 Dodge 4dr sedan flat head car.

The OD transmissions are Borg-Warner units, the non-OD are mostly Chrysler built.
