Does anyone know of a source for the shims to adjust axle end play?

Hi. I only know this source: https://dcmclassics.com/bearings-races-and-seals/1210-bs-3522-outer-...
But those only will fit to your '57 i think. The later 8 3/4 axle flanges are different if i'm not wrong.

And that is exactly my current topic: I installed the new axle drive shaft with a new wheel bearing.
I installed three shims, each 0.012 thick, on the axle flange. When i test-mounted the Backingplate, the axle end play completly disappeared.
Unfortunately I have no space in the garage and can only jack up one side. So I couldn't hit the opposite axis with a rubber mallet to set the bearing.
What do you think, should I order and use more shims until I have a proper axle end play? If I do that, would the axle end play correct, even though I couldn't knock in the opposite axle shaft?

Thanks, for the link. I am using the '57s original axle so that is exactly what I need. I'm not going to be much help cause I have never done it before. But I would follow the procedure outlined in the manual. Why did you replace the axle shaft?

On one side there should be a shim pack that has 0.040" thickness. The other side should have at least 0.040" plus the shims to get the correct end play. Do you have that?

There's no shortcut Todd - you MUST hit both sides as you need to push both bearings outward for to understand what end play you have.

Hi wizard thanks for reply. Okay, I have to think about how I can do it. As you wrote in an other thread...i don't have to demount anything at the opposite side, not even the wheel, i just have to jack the opposite side, right?

Do you have a FSM for the car? They do a good step by step procedure in there. It would be nice to have the special tools that they use but you should be bale to do it without them. On one side there should be a shim pack that has 0.040" thickness. The other side should have at least 0.040" plus the shims to get the correct end play. Do you have that?

Hi. Yes, i already know that. I read the specs and wizard helped me along with a lot of questions i had the last time. I've also never done this before. But i now have to jack up the opposite rear side to set the end play as wizard wrote.....

Hi again. Well, when i mounted the drum but there is an issue to tighten up the castle nut up to specs. The hole in the shaft doesn’t line up with the nut notch when tightened to 200 Nm. It's not possible to put the cotter pin in. If I tighten the nut even more, it's way too much. And I don't have the strength even though I'm a strong guy. Is it OK if I tighten the nut less so that the cotter pin can be installed? Or do I have to experiment with thinner washers?
I was also surprised that the nut is already so firm, but the hub still not flush with the taper of the shaft. 3 to 4 mm are still missing to flush with the taper.

The torque spec in the FSM is the minimum, it is permissible to tighten further to line up the cotter pin hole. The end of the taper shouldn't be flush with the hub, this would cause the nut to bottom out.

Remove the castle nuts, apply some copper paste on the threads and on the washer, tighten to specs and keep on until the cotter pin can be inserted.

The hub will never be flush and 3-4 mm seems normal to me.

Hi and thanks for support. Okay, tighten up to specs worked out with an additional thin metal sheet of washer.

Good Todd, mind that you need to recheck the torque after 50-100 kilometers drive. There's a small risk that the taper will seat itself and become loose slightly.

The distance actually is not that important but the drums must get hot at least once. That said, I never experienced that retorqueing was actually necessary, hubs or wheels.
