Location: California | Jon, I replaced the metal brake line and removed and inspected the drums. Sanded the shoes with 40 grit and got several good stops but now is starting to shake again. Sure it just needs the shoes replaced with asbestos ones. Other than that the car drives and performs excellent. I have arthritis and it is just too difficult for me to do the repairs. The big deal is my hips are quite painful and the driving position is not good for me. Being 6'6 it's too tight a squeeze. |

Location: Williams California | I recently had the pleasure of a ride in this car, to a 1957 Chinese restaurant for lunch a week ago. Paul was having some brake issue with the car, and it only appeared once while on this jaunt. Seemed somewhat minor, however, but it was the final straw for Paul, after repairing everything on the car the previous owner failed to do correctly. Other than the dogleg area on the lower RH front fender, the car appeared rust free, potmetal was near perfect on interior parts, which are usually pitted. Paul's descriptions can be trusted, he's one of the most honest guys I know, |

Location: California | The brakes are fixed. Installed asbestos brakes shoes, replace a front drum that had hard sports. Stops nicely now. Ready for a new home. |

Location: California | I’ve had issues with the new shoes sold for our cars too and when I used nos asbestos ones and the problem went away. I know they used to “arc” brake shoes in the “old days”,but that process is now outlawed in California too for health reasons. Are most people here running old stock shoes with asbestos or are there asbestos free shoes for our cars that work as good as the originals? |

Location: WA/USA | Paul,
I'm 6-5 and have the same general problem: Fitting comfortably in cars.
I typically take the front seat out and drill new holes 1"-2" farther back (depending on the car) and reinstall. I have also moved the bolt on the seat track to the end of the track to gain an inch instead of drilling the carpet/floor. Just that little amount makes a world of difference. Much further back and the controls start to get too far away. |

That dust will mess up your lungs. I used modern semi-metallic shoes on my 58 Plymouth and no problems. Vibration can be caused by a lot of things. But brake shoe material is not one of them. Ron |

Location: Lordstown, Ohio | most of the times the vibrations are from the Chinese drums that are out of round. i remember getting some from a guy in Carlisle that sold all brake components and suspension parts. they were so out of round after being turned they had no extra meat to ever turn again. best finding a good used set to have turned i dont think there is a good replacement drum for new or older cars that doesn't have that issue. put a china drum on my 09 gmc 2xs before it sorta stopped |
