Got a notice today from SMS Auto Fabrics advertising a 19% sale, first time in their 43 years of business. Apparently it applies to everything they sell. I have no connection to them, just a past customer. If you aren't in a hurry they do have a good product line.

However: "Local government restrictions put in place to minimize the COVID-19 outbreak have limited the amount of workers we can have in our building, and will likely limit our manufacturing and order fulfillment". I interpret that as saying they are essentially shut down, but they are happy to accept your money now, and they'll get to it when they can. What happens to your money if he dies from this virus? Just something to think about.

I personally have had great dealings with a Doug , but I know how he works and his he doesn’t always deliver .
I’m with Nathan on this one ,Doug knows not so many will b spending now , so he knows getting any money in is a good thing to keep paying his rent etc.. and if he doesn’t deliver then it’s tough luck to the customer , so they just keep surviving by having people pay ahead . He isn’t offering this to help you out believe me .
If Doug was serious he would catch up on all the outstanding orders while not so many are spending , so that then he gets his full staff on board he would b caught up and can make up orders quicker than ever . Or re organise things etc , there is plenty he could do in this quiet time . He just wants your money and worry about the rest later . Be wary if I was you , he might get a glut of orders and you could b waiting longer than ever !

I went out on a limb and ordered four panels (door and rear) for the Coronet!  I was going to order seat covers, but you have to mail in your old ones for patterns - I didn't have any.  I noticed it was payment in full.  I asked about timeline - she said probably end of the year.  We'll see.  I have heard SMS does great work on the panels - and they have the only game in town!

Try and pay using a credit card then if no delivery in a reasonable time frame, you have some recourse , same with PayPal.

I have a roll of correct gold vinyl from SMS that I never used, if interested. That, along with a new white convertible top ('57 Dodge) and a lot of other surplus items will soon be offered for sale here prior to going to ebay.

One of my projects for this spring is to organize all my surplus and get photos for a listing. I still need to figure out what I might need for the wagon project, though.

I took advantage of the sale and ordered yesterday. they seemed responsive to my inquiries. I did not ask about shipmen time since they say up front tha they are working with a reduced staff. I am not in a big hurry, will let everyone know when it has shipped. Saved me over 4200 by taking advantage of the sale.

Both actually. Approximately 6-8 emails getting samples, determining what I needed and how much of it. I then emailed requesting an invoice for the order, and in minutes she called and took my credit card information, paid invoice followed minutes later..

Update: After all the bad reports of SMS, I was pleasantly surprised to find a company responsive and willing to satisfy customers. I ordered all the interior material for my 1959 Imperial restoration on 6 April, today I got proof of shipment by UPS, will arrive at my house on 21 April! Not bad at all in the middle of the Corvid 19 crisis, while all the other vendors are operating on a skeleton crew, and quite inefficiently as well.

I ordered fabric and embossed vinyl for my 59 Firedome Sportsman on March 31. they arrived April 13.
I also ordered door panels but who knows how long they'll take. I've been waiting 20 months for door panels for my '56 Hornet.

i got a quote of sale price at 120$ a yard for 60 imperial seat inner cloth (with the crown stitched). It isn't factory exact though.

normally 150$ a yard and the car needs 5.5 yards. its a diamond pattern with crown.

I just ordered the materials for my 1960 Chrysler New Yorker Town & Country. A couple prices went up since the quote I got in October. Especially the embossing fee. I need to make some paper patterns to make sure I got enough of everything once it gets here as I don't know when I'll be able to get the seats done.

The sent me the wrong carpet sample for the floor carpet so I'm waiting for the new sample to come before ordering that as it was almost $600 for that, and that's just for the regular carpet kit extended under the middle seat for the wagon.

You might be at the wrong source for carpets. Try Newark for carpets, best company out there. I just had them add two yards of carpet to my order for the seat backs like yours and they did. Less than $200 for the entire order, first class people, they are closed downn by the coronavirus now but they answer phone and emails.

I'll check them out. Stock Interiors sent me samples and they are junk. What they consider cut pile is like fuzzy indoor/outdoor carpet they sell at Home Depot. This picture shows my original cut pile in the middle and a sample of left over carpet that came with my 300F and the sample from Stock Interiors. Only the back of my front seat uses loop pile. The sample from SMS was better than the one from Stock Interiors.

I got my "cut pile" carpet sample from SMS today. Glad I didn't order the carpet kit. It's the same cheap fuzzy stuff as Stock Interiors uses. I could just go to Home Depot and get this. I'll see what Newark sends me. I don't really mind that they don't have the right thing, they should just say so up front. I sent them the sample pictures before they sent the sample.

I heard that there was really only one manufacturer of automotive carpet, so you are likely to get the same stuff no matter which automotive distributor you go to.

Just got an e-mail from SMS stating that the sale is ending 5/15/2020. I got part of my order. The loop carpet for the back of the front seat was sent from ACC. Hopefully I'll get the seat materials soon. Some of it had to be embossed so that will probably delay it (hopefully not for months).

I got the following from them. I got the basketweave and flat vinyls for my seats yesterday. I didn't get the embossed vinyl and there was no invoice included to explain the situation. I sent them an e-mail and they responded this morning to let me know that there is at least a 12 week lead time on materials that have to be embossed. So short of better communication, they do appear to be trying to get orders out faster than in the past. Only time will tell when I get the balance of my order.

===========================

Thank You!
When we announced our 19% off sale in March, we thought it would be a good way to show our appreciation to the classic car community for its support over the past 40+ years; and a good way to help both you and us get through these tough times.

As it turned out, the positive response to the sale was beyond anything we ever imagined. Thank you all so much!

Of course, working with a reduced staff in order to maintain proper social distancing has made it challenging to quickly respond to each and every e-mail and phone call. However, rest assured that WE WILL RESPOND to every customer's request as soon as possible.

If you inquired about making a purchase before the sale ended and have not yet received a response, the 19% DISCOUNT WILL STILL BE HONORED, even if your order is not yet finalized.

Thank you for your patience as we work through all the emails and calls. If you have already placed your order, we appreciate your business and will deliver your order as fast as possible.

I'm now into the "shipping in two weeks" segment of my order. When I check every two weeks it's two weeks until they're shipping. Of course I have 3/4 of my order and can't do anything with it until the last material shows up. Stock materials come quickly but embossed stuff is held up.

Update: no panels arrived or communication of any kind yet!  I have heard all about it and now I'm experiencing it: the SMS customer service experience

So far it's been just shy of 11 months since I placed my order.  These door panels are going into the '58 Coronet convertible.  The rear panels should be small and pretty easy.  Two years and two months! Yikes!  Did you have to pester them?

After waiting since last March and numerous "it will be 2 weeks" responses, I finally threatened them with submitting a BBB complaint. That got them off their butts to do the embossed material that was the only thing left in my order. And even with that they shorted me a yard of material for my door panels. They say it's in the mail now.

A friend is still waiting for his order from April and is going to try the same tactic. Their business model is apparently to use the money from new customers to keep them afloat. Only threats seem to work with them. I'm still going to submit a BBB complaint as they shouldn't treat their customers this way just because they have an apparent monopoly on the market.

It took 23 months (Dec. 2018-Nov. 2020) for the door panels for my '56 Hudson Hornet 2 dr. Back in March 2020 I ordered door
panels for my '59 Desoto 4 dr hardtop. Lets see how long it takes this time...

At first I contacted them every 3-4 months and they would reply "we're checking into it". I then had so much going on
I forgot about them. All of a sudden in late Oct. 2020 I got a notice on my card of a charge from SMS, and an email from UPS.
5 days later they showed up.

That said, they look amazing!

I'm surprised they didn't charge your card right away. They charged mine while I was on the phone ordering.

They took a deposit when I ordered. About 40%.

I'm just surprised you got to talk to an actual person!

If you're ordering stock material that they just have to cut and roll up, it takes anywhere from a week to a month. Anything custom, you're going to be waiting a long time.

I'm going to have to call.  Sitting around waiting for it to show up is probably not going to work out very well.

I called this past week to get an idea of what the upholstery would run for my car.

About $3800 shipped. Certainly not the same price for a Chevy! Then again, I won't pass myself at every show, either.

Seat covers- I send the old ones for patterns, about 8-10 month turnaround (!)

Door panels- 4-6 month turnaround. I don't recall if they wanted the old ones or not.

Carpet and headliner are about three weeks.

Now I have to find a trim shop around here that can/will actually do it, unless I can find out how.

They no longer take calls for order status.  You have to send an email.  I sent an email stating they had estimated my order would be sent to me in December.  Kim sent an response quickly.  In her response, she said they were waiting to see if I was going to send stainless trim to them to install or if I would install it myself.  There is no stainless trim on the 58 Coronet door panels.  She said it will be ready at the end of April.  I'm not going to hold my breath.

After ordering a year ago, here's where I rate my chances of getting the door panels:

April         0%

May          3%

December 10%

2022         50%

And that's only if I pester them every day!

Threaten them with a BBB complaint. They shipped the balance of my order after I did that. The portion they hadn't shipped was embossed vinyl.

File a complaint in small claims court. Most companies don't care about BBB since it's just another membership organization. It has no teeth. The courts do.

SMS, Mopar Mel, and George Laurie have the worst reputations in the business, but people keep giving them money. I don't understand.

SMS has a monopoly on a lot of it, sometimes you have to hold your nose and hope for the best. The other two I wouldn't give a dime to.

They tried that stunt on me once, waited a week and file a complaint with my CC, the owner called me furious... calling me names and stuff, assuring that the pkg was sent and bla bla bla... All BS he never sent anything, got my money back from the CC..

If you order a door panel or something like that, I will suggest you next time to send the money to me instead, at least your money will go to a good cause and helping a FL fellow member to pay his bills.

The monopoly bit is frustrating.  I wish some Chinese company would reverse-engineer SMS's loom and door panel patterns to fire up a small factory using child labor, whipping these things out in two weeks at one quarter the price.  SMS would be out of business in about four seconds.

Even more frustrating: I think SMS has a decent turn-around with raw materials.  I would have rather just ordered the raw materials to have a local shop make the panels.  My panels are just flat panels - so the wait time for them to put the material on a flat panel seems extra crazy.  The dimensional panels would be a lot more difficult for a local shop to recreate.

Their business model seems to be to take your money first. Then ship part of your order (stock material) and then delay delay delay. That way you have hope you're going to get the rest and make it harder for you to cancel as you already have cut material. Of course they may truly have a labor shortage but they should tell people up front a realistic timeframe and not charge your card until they are ready to send. I understand that for custom work they could expect a deposit so that they don't get stuck.

The worst part is the constant lying. They told me numerous times it was going to be "two more weeks" or worse when they told me that they were currently working on my material and it would be shipped the next day, which of course was another lie. They will also prioritize some customers over another for the same material. This was the one and only time I'd bought materials from them and yes, I understood what I was going to go through.

My friends from Australia actually arranged to go to SMS while they were here and pick up their materials and door panels they had ordered. For that, they actually got them done before they arrived. Unfortunately they made convertible rear panels instead of hardtop ones. But they did make the correct ones and send them in a timely fashion.

I think you guys should explore the idea of having a fiberglass shop molding the door panels, from the originals or some parts cars. Fiberglass it is so malleable and can be modified so easy. Plus it will never warp after the first rubber sealing failure....Then any decent upholstery shop can do the rest...

Best of all, once you have one mold, you can make thousand of replicas...

I did materials from them for two cars, came fairly fast and great quality and price.
This last car I just ordered the materials for the door panels and having my upholstery guy do them.
I ordered two identical headliners and have been waiting well over a year for them.

I just finally the rest of my order from ~June 2020. Almost two years to get everything, but I will say that as per usual, I am very happy with the quality of what I (eventually) received.

FYI, I have reached people on the phone, but I always dial "1" as if I am placing a new order. That is the only way to speak to someone live without leaving a message.

Well, I placed my order on March 27, 2020.  They are no longer responding to my emails.  I called my credit card (AmEx) to dispute the charge, but I'm way, way past any help they can give.  I am going to send SMS a 30-day notice and demand letter with intent to file charges with the Canby, OR Police Department and the U.S. Attorney's Office.  I'll probably copy the Canby Herald News and the Better Business Bureau to see if I can get these idiots to deliver or send me a full, present-value refund plus interest.  These morons are jerks!

SMS had 10 years ago at least a 2-3 year backlog. I can only imagine what it is after their sale a while ago. Two years seems a bit too early to get charges brought. I am amazed. Their communication and time frame is well publicized. Their quality is great and those of us who have received items have been generally quite satisfied.

Their major failing is the constant lying when you contact them for an update. I threatened them with a BBB complaint and they got the last piece of my order done. I wasn't getting door panels or anything like that. It was just embossed material. And I knew their reputation up front but what are you going to do when they are the only source? I even asked them about their reputation when I called to order and they said those issues were behind them. They lie so easily.

Yeah, I guess I really started to worry / get pissed when they stopped answering my emails.  Especially since their answering system tells you to inquire by email.  I sent them my most frightening letter and Doug called me back right away.  He said call him back later this month and they will get it shipped out in June.  I know, I know.

I knew the reputation going in, but it all seems so random.  At least one person here ordered after I did and recived their goods already.  Others have had to wait three years.  That ain't no way to run a railroad!

Mike,
Have you heard or seen anything from them yet?
It took me over 3 years and a trip to Canby to finally get my stuff for the wagon.
When I finally did get my door panels, I had to re-make them and add padding to the dimpled areas at the top of the panels.
Unfortunately they have a monopoly on our market.
Hope your stuff comes correct.

Nothing yet, Bob.  I suspect if you order the full boat with seats, convertible top, door panels, carpets, floor mats, and fuzzy dice - you probably get better treatment.  Lord only knows how they keep track of their orders.  All that and what showed up on your doorstep was not good!  Yikes.

Nothing is worth that wait, but the panels are very nice.  The box was very well packed - lots of extra / reject vinyl for padding (too bad they didn't include the trimmings from the vinyl they used to make the panels!  There are a few minor flaws in the mylar, not that I would ever return them.  Not too big of a deal.  Interestingly, there is a white or ivory vinyl stripe under the lower mylar, which I don't think I have ever seen on an original door panel, making these door panels tri-tone.  It looks great, but I'm not convinced that is completely original in design.  I'm just glad to finally have the dang things!

Those came out good, Mike.

I ordered just the fabric and vinyl for my '59 DeSoto convertible, as the panels and other items can be stitched up by my upholsterer. I've received two out of three rolls of material, the 3rd they said they have to add the pleats to, so I knew it would be a wait. I haven't touched the car in a year and a half anyways, so it's not really a bad deal.

I happened to be on holiday on the Oregon coast (Cannon Beach, Lincoln City, etc) this past week and decided to go to the Evergreen Aviation museum
that houses the Spruce Goose in McMinnville Oregon on the way home via Portland.

That put me in striking distance of SMS Auto Fabrics in Canby Oregon. I contacted Doug late last week and while there were some communication issues
(because I didn't want to pay roaming fees for my Canadian cell phone), I was able to just show up today and get 2.5 yds of the 541 fabric I need for
my 56 Dodge Custom Royal.

Doug and Brandon were great and I am a happy owner of new OE-look repro fabric for my 541 trim code seats.

Now I *just* need find somebody local to sew it all up over the winter.

I received my roll of vinyl that I waited on them to add pleats to, and, alas, they used the wrong color vinyl.

Guess I should have expected that. Now to get them to remedy the issue. Not sure if they answer e-mails, or if I have to drive up there to do it.
