I don't want to convey that I'm bashing this car or the seller but can someone explain to me the reasoning why this car is priced the way it is? I'm not looking for an answer like "It's worth what someone will pay for it.". I realize that it's been restored almost perfect (I don't now the nuances of the car, such as interior fabric, engine bracket configurations, and the like to say it's truly perfect.), but it's priced triple what I've seen restored convertible Adventurers go for.

Because you can ask anything for a car and why not. I wouldn't be shocked at a 250-300 price at the right auction pre covid

I agree, the color red doesn't do anything for this car, IMHO. Also if this is IN FACT a Fireflite, it's upholstered wrong.
There are red flags all over this one! Stay away.
This interior on this car is pure Firedome, at least the seats are. And the door panels are upholstered like a Firewseep, and missing some specific chrome strips.
Would be good to see the data plate, betting it's Firedome. I can't believe this. It's ludicrous.

This is what a Fireflite interior should look like. Fireflites have deluxe door panels with built in armrests. That red convert has Firesweep door panels.

Looking further down in the ad copy, the car is listed as a Firesweep, according to VIN yet it's advertised as a Fireflite at the top of the ad, and the ad copy even goes into explaining the difference between this car, which they call a Fireflite, and the Firesweep, which they explain is the low level entry model !!!! What a load.

VIN DECODE
M412114555
M-1959
4-Desoto
1-Firesweep
2-Dodge Main Assy Plant
114555-Sequential Unit Number

Interesting thing is that the car looks to be on the long 126" wheelbase if you look at the front fenders closely they look to be the longer fenders used on Firedome and Fireflite. The Firesweep was built on a 122" Dodge wheelbase with the short front clip. This car is a conglomeration of who knows what. Even the ad states that 2 donor cars were used to build it. Good grief. So who knows what exactly you have here.

STAY AWAY !!!

That ad copy is the most overblown load of bulls__t I've ever seen, imo that car is misrepresented in the extreme.
The '57 4 dr hardtop they have is at least 30% overpriced as well. The sellers are idiots.

In addition, imo again, pre-covid prices will never be seen again, not only will buyers not have the money, people are re-adjusting their priorities to more important things, and overpriced toys will not be among them.

. . .  this looks nice, Ian!

But this red Fireflite is professionally restored: fitted hood, aligned side moldings, lowered top. . . . . . . for less than $500.  Happy I am not a professional restorer!  - SERGE -

Ian has nailed this car. It is clearly a car made of 3 donor cars-a Firesweep body (see data plate), a long wheelbase chassis and a senior front clip

To expand on the data plate 415 is Desoto(4) Firesweep (1) convertible (5). It was originally all white (XXX) with a base silver/white cloth and vinyl interior (314)

The layout for the interior looks similar to a FD or FF interior but the door treatment is Firesweepish. And why the FS arm rests

Rich people get wealthy in down times. A very small segment of people can spend that type of money on cars. That segment in 3-4 years, will be significantly beyond where they are now in most cases.

Somebody pieced together their dream '59 Desoto convertible. I don't have any issue with that, but I do have an issue with it being misrepresented as a genuine Fireflite convertible. But maybe the prospective buyer just looks at the car as a beautiful red '59 Desoto and will buy it accordingly. It does look like a very nice car, even with some obvious flaws that would need to be addressed.

Just by how high the top sits when folded indicates that it is probably a re-body using a hardtop shell without using the convertible
rear wheel wells.

Surely the BODY = 415 on the cowl data tag tells us what the original body was (hardtop or convertible) - unless they swapped the tags too.

415 decodes to DeSoto Firesweep Convertible.

Is that originally equipped with Overdrive Transmission (code 294)?

http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=73443&...

But no Overdrive Trans offered on the 1959 DeSotos…

Ah, terd you say, Dr. D.  My brother is now credentialed as the High Priest of Terds.  And he says that all terds are not brown, i.e., they can be reddish, almost clear, yellowish, kind of a creamy color with greenish tints, or even nearly black depending upon one's diet and gastro condition.

And - - - wait for it - - - - I like the red Desoto better than yours, just not the price!

Doc!  The Helm Brothers!  Now all we need is Larry, Tin Can, Cornpatch, and a few others and we'll have the old gang back together!

Mope, that reminds me - I need to revive an old thread down in the Nether.

You would think that for half a million, they would be able to put all of the 6 letters spelling DeSoto without getting one upside down.

Most of the letters are not aligned properly. The "S" is just the worst (in part because, like you say, it is upside down). The T has issues as well.

Attention to detail? LOL.
