Having been many times delayed for health reasons, collapsed pole building from 3 ft of snow on roof, building a new pole building, selling off excess projects and RE, I have finally got my uncle's 57 Lancer 2 dr hardtop with 325 hemi into the new pole building. Got a rotisserie recently, 2 post lift coming.

Now, my intention Is to first fix the rockers, front floors and then remove body from chassis. I know there is some Minnesota rust thru from mud packed in right rear frame rail, left looks ok from the outside. I did welding for a living in another life and think I can repair or replace the right rear frame rail back of axle if I decide to go that route.

However, during my years of accumulating parts, I acquired a 1957 Firesweep 4 door parts car with a 325 poly non-running engine. I dismantled it completely down to the chassis and it appears to be identical to the Dodge frame, except nicer shape being a South Dakota car. No mud in rails, less surface rust, etc..

So questions:

1. Are the Dodge and Firesweep frames actually the same, despite one being a 2 door and the other a 4 door?

2. If you were in my position and the frames are identical (except VIN), would you repair the Dodge rear frame rail ('s ?) or just refurbish the Desoto frame and use that? And why would you chose that option over the other?

Thanks, Mike

since your a welder? It might be a simple fix for you.

I think it would help to see a picture though. I guess you can judge the welding work.

4 door and 2 door is the same for that car.

Plymouth, Dodge, Desoto all use the same frame in 57 for a v8 car. part number 1829 750.

I thought Plymouth was different. It has a smaller wheelbase, right? But the Firesweep and Dodge should be the same. I would use the Firesweep frame. Why not? It is in much better shape so use it. If you care about the frame stampings, clean off the Dodge frame and find out how it is marked, and then stamp the DeSoto in a similar way. If you don't care, then just paint it and go.

Brushwolf, I'm paralleling you. I'm using the frame and floors from a 57 Custom Royal 4-door to save my 57 Coronet Club Coupe. The Royal was already parted and pretty mush disassembled when I got it, but had solid floors and a great frame, so it is all sliding under the Club Coupe courtesy of a Dewalt Sawzall, air chisel, and a lot of scraping, grinding, and welding. The frame on the Club Coupe is rusty and had part of it hacked off, so it was no-brainier/time saver to do the frame swap. I'm also putting the floor and trunk pan into the Club First, then removing it to refurbish and set on the rebuilt Royal Frame. In essence, I'm using the old Club Coupe frame as a jig to make sure the floors go back in right.

Between the two cars, I have almost exactly what I need to make one decent one car. Both were probably crusher candidates

Use the DeSoto frame. The only difference is at the very front on the side of the frame where the upper bumper brackets mount . You may need to weld new nuts in two existing holes as there are four holes but only two have nuts in them. Different models used different sets of holes for the bumper brackets.

Did some digging through the Canadian parts books, 1957 to 1959. No combined years for that period.

Part number 1829 750 is listed only in 1958 edition, and the 1958 edition shows 1829 750 as fitting "L" series (1958) models P2, E2, and F2, suburban models. The "2" with P, E, and F mean it is for V8 models, in particular V8 suburbans. The "P" is for Plymouth "E" for the Canadian Dodge and export Dodge Kingsway, with "F" for the export DeSoto Diplomat.

As it fits the Plymouth, etc. Suburban models, the wheelbase is 122". So it is the correct size.
