For those who have stripped their wheels, what's the best media to use without damaging the bead area? Looking to remove both paint and surface rust.

Glass beads are pretty harmless. Sandpaper and wire brushes will work too. The scotchbrite pads/discs will remove it also. I'm talking about the bead area. Normal sandblasting media will be fine for the wheel.

A local media guy did mine and he used crushed glass.

I have a cabinet and use the finer grade ( around 80 to 100 grit) Al Oxide for just about everything
