In developing an annotated diagram of the 19 low-slung, Swept-Wing, 1957 Dodges in another thread, there were several sources of information including frwl (Igor), RDP (Robert D.) and LD3_Greg (Greg L.). In the course of that thread, several D500 1957 Dodges showed up one way or the other. In addition, I had already collected a few images of 57 D500 Cowl tags and/or IBM cards. So armed with with that knowledge, I decided to take a first kick at the cat with annotating the 57 Dodge line-up with the known (at this moment) 57 Dodge D500 model codes. They all start with 2 (= Dodge). Most have the next number = 5 = chassis for D500s or Super D500s. One (a former Missouri Highway Patrol car) had "7" as the second number (perhaps because it had bigger than normal brakes (?)). The third number represented the model line: Coronet (= 4) , Royal (=7), Custom Royal (=8) and Sierra wagon (=6) . The last number is the body style (2 = 2dr Sedan, 3= Convertible, 5 = 4 dr sedan, 6= 2dr hardtop, 8 = 6 pass wagon and 9 = 4dr Hardtop).

The diagram below has blanks where there is no hard data that is evident at this moment. It is labeled "Rev0" and it can be updated with new information as soon as hard data (photos of the IBM cards, Cowl Tags, car, etc) are there to confirm the new D500 model codes.

Typical. Just when you think you have it figured out, the exception to the rule pops up. In this case, found (or re-found) by Igor (frwl)

frwl - 2020-08-12 9:06 AM.
Another LA-build «oddball»:
Equipped with a D500 engine, but body code 2146 (it should be 2546)
I found it when I was looking at the ads cars for sale
The owner told it was equipped with an original engine and NeilD500 helped him to decipher the tag…
The car was located in Ayer, MA 01432.

Seems like there could occasionally be errors in data tags.

The other possibility is that the engine was replaced.

You'd have to pull the punch card to find out.

Was their any separate designatior for the super D?  I think the 501 had a separate number code.

All I know is the 57 D-500 had a "2" punched in the 37 column of the IBM card (and a 2 printed as 372 on the Broadcast sheet) and the Super D-500 had a 1 in column 49 and 491 on the Broadcast sheet. How or if that information made it to the cowl data tag is the realm of LD3_Greg and the departed D500_Neil (Vedder). I don't know if I've seen a D-501 punch card or broadcast sheet.

Example 57 Dodge IBM card and Broadcast sheet (from two different cars):

Well, As if by magic, overnight, I received a copy of E. Carl Kiekhaefer's early build D-501 Coronet 2dr Lancer (engine D501-1001) IBM card. The fashionable Coral and Charcoal car had the simple, 2146 chassis (probably because his crew were going to modify the suspension and brakes any way, might as well get the lower cost chassis). It was a special order car (Spec. Order = 0574) and I am told that it did get the convertible's X-member installed in the factory during its build. There is no 372 or 491 type punches on the card but the engine number D501-1001 is both stamped and handwritten on the card. The transmission was the manual "1" and the rear end was "E" = 3.73:1.

I will ask sender if I can post the image of the IBM card.

Found it in my pictures marked as "Coronet D501".
I don't remember where I found it.
There is no photo of the car, no description, no IBM card – nothing else.
Just signed picture "Coronet D501». I don't know how true that is…

Can to add this is Coronet 2door Sedan (2142), equipped with Powerflite transmission (292)

Igor: That cowl tag is from this car (below) that nobody believes is legitimate, even as a Super D500. It has a KD500 325 engine, not a D501 354 engine.

Question #2:
This ’57 Dodge Coronet Super D500 had been selling in last September at rmsothebys.com

https://rmsothebys.com/en/auctions/af19/auburn-fall/lots/r0317-1957-...

There is only one «1» (411) present on the tag…
If the Super D500 models have code 491, so could it be this option?

What the code 407 is this? And 442? Black convertible top color?
However originally car paint is monotone Gallant Gold (1PPP), not black…
Greg – need your help for decipher…

"Upgraded with 354 cu. in. Hemi V-8 with two four-barrel carburetors" = been messed with. I see a 492 on the cowl tag but that means nothing. 293 = Torqueflite but that was different on the IBM card. 491 on the IBM card = Super D500 and 372 = D500 but according to Greg, that info never shows up on the Cowl Tag.

At least the 2543 makes sense, i.e. Coronet Convertible prepped for D500 or Super D500/

It's still black magic to me.

Very interesting! Maybe they do make errors? Maybe because it's the first one built? Maybe Karl P can shed some light on it?

Good idea but who do you think sent me the image of that IBM card? Karl and I had a conversation about the Kiekhaefer D501 car last week (Aug. 9th) and he told me that the body code was 2146.

I said "Strange that ECK's D501 was not on a 25 or 27 chassis as in 2546 or 2746 but just a lowly Coronet Lancer 2146 chassis/body. The only explanation that I would venture was he just wanted the D501 engine and a base chassis that his crew would modify with sway bars, brakes, wheels, etc. of their team's (Charlie Strang's ?) design. I am quite surprised that he didn't go for the 2142 Coronet V8 2 dr chassis. I wonder whether he special ordered the 2143 convertibles "X" member."

Karl replied with : "The K Corp. order form specified the convertible X frame be installed. The car would have been outfitted with the NASCAR rear and brakes once it was in Wisconsin" (and a few other tidbits).

I've asked Karl whether I can post an image of the 2146/D501-1001's IBM card.

I just thought Karl may have wondered why the first one built was coded differently from all other 501s. I'm sure Neil would have caught it and Neil and Karl did a lot of work together. All others would have a 4 as the chassis code. Just the same as my chart of body codes.

Karl P. III gave me the go ahead to post the IBM card:

"Dave, Yes, go ahead. Neil and I were working on some ECK/Dodge decoding projects before he died and this was one of them."

Very interesting stuff!  In the case of the 501 program, I do wonder if they may have made up the coding as the went along, finalizing the conventions after the first was built.  That's a long shot, but it might explain the weirdness.  With the off-coded 500s, there really could be some possibility of an error - those must be really unusual too.

The teal/white Coronet 2dr sedan was owned by Bill Amberger of OH...he stated it was a flathead six when he sold it to the owner who was/is selling it...Sean Mecardo sold them the NOS D500 Emblem

Thanks, Dave, for posting that punch card.
Thanks, Karl and(Neil) for answering my question.
As Neil points out (on the punch card) it was ordered as a Std Coronet 2 Dr HT so that is why it's coded 2146. Karl has mentioned it was special ordered with a Coronet convert frame which came standard with the "X" and front sway bar assembly. Special ordered with the KD 500 1001 and of course the unique motor mounts for the 354. The special order could also have included the 956/7 TBars and the HD rear springs. The brakes and rear axle etc. were done in ECK's shops.

John: Thanks very much. I was hoping that you would chime in as the owner of 5 (count them folks) 57 D500 cars. However, I am hoping that you can tell me exactly which cars each of the plates came from. I will guess below:

From your list, I will guess (please confirm)

1957 Dodge D500 Custom Royal Lancer 2dr HT 325 Hemi
1957 Dodge D500 Royal 4dr sedan 325ci Hemi with factory A/C
1957 Dodge D500 Coronet 325ci Hemi 2dr Lancer
1957 Dodge D500 Coronet 325ci Hemi 2dr Lancer (#2)
1957 Dodge D500 Sierra Wagon 325ci

2286 = the very early production bodied 57 D500 Custom Royal lancer, LA built (backed up by the FCA Letter and IBM card that you have) (LA Built = different cowl data tag/plate format from the Detroit tags)

2575? = the 57 D500 Royal 4dr sedan?

2546? = the 57 Dodge D500 Coronet 325ci Hemi 2dr Lancer?

2568? = the 57 Dodge D500 Sierra (4 dr) Wagon?

Link worked great. Video almost gave me chills with 4 D500s ideling away. I presume that it is the non-runner, just of of view, to the left, this screen shot that is missing its tags and badging.(??)

The first white car in the video is a 58 CRL, the Body shell out side the garage is also a 58 CRL...the missing tags 5th D500 is the rust bucket that's too far gone to save as I walk over to the others...I do have the D500 emblem off the trunk lid...I just pulled it to keep it safe...the engine # is KD-500-3462

I try to drive all 4 as much as possible, but with the AZ heat it can be a PITA...with vapor locking...the red/white early prodution D500 is the worst for doing it.

I have watched the video – Thanks John!

We have two LA-built D500 with cowl tags on them.
If no one confirms or denies option "M3 = 2 = D500 Optional Engine" on the tag (present on both cars)
So here my next guessing:

First – Coronet has M2=4: it has to tone steering wheel, but not seen a rear stone shields on the pictures…
Second – Custom Royal M2=9: it has black steering wheel (standard) and rear stone shields

If you don't pay attention to the wheel covers (spinner on the CR and no covers on the Coronet)
I can guess next:

M2 = 4 = Rear Quarter Stone Shields, Two Tone Plastic Steering Wheel, Standard Wheel Covers – it is Accessory Group #4
M2 = 5 = Rear Quarter Stone Shields, Two Tone Plastic Steering Wheel, Deluxe Wheel Covers – It is Accessory Group #5 (no examples yet)
M2 = 9 = Rear Quarter Stone Shields only…

The only reference I have for trim code 213 is Custom Coronet, red and gold? this is an incomplete note from Neil. Maybe he means red vinyl and black/gold cloth?

Based on what we have learned in the last few days, I've updated the chart with the 57 Royal D500 Sedan's body code, 2575, and a note that suggests, as we have seen, there are D500 cars, possibly early builds (or special orders) that do not have the "25nn" body code. The only way to know for sure would be to get the IBM card which will have the D500 engine number on it (KD500-nnnn). Without the card and without a 25nn body code, it might be (and probably is) a clone.

Thanks Greg.
You probably right: Red Vinyl and Black Cloth with Gold Snoflakes/Stars on it
John’s video shows red bolsters and black cloth on the Coronet Lancer…

Looks like Coronet standard trim codes begins for 1xx, and Custom trim for 2xxx

Correct...213 is the Red/ Black with gold snowflake cloth "Custom Coronet"...that is the original interior! First I've seen with the line embossed center sections...most I've seen is just plain smooth vinyl
When I bought the car 2 years ago it still had the clear seat covers on it, but they were worn out discolored and spliting..I removed them carefully and saved them for templates to make new ones...Some state that the clear covers were installed at later dates...this is a 1 owner car parked up in 1966...the clear covers were installed with the Same 1 hog rings used to install the upholstery, not added later

No problem. I am not the real 57/58 Dodge expert. That is LD3_Greg (Greg L.) but I am here everyday (especially with Covid lock-downs) so I will respond very quickly.

Some photos of the car exterior (and interior) and engine bay and the data tag will help to confirm things.

Photos must be <250 kB (e.g. 1024 x 768 works well) and must be .jpg *NOT* iPhone .jpeg.

Good luck posting (you might want to start a new thread in the Members Rides sub-forum)

That's what I see on my '57 Chryslers & '56 Plymouth as well. The clear covers are installed with the same hog rings used to install the fabric, not added after the fact. There are no hog rings that don't go through the clear covers as well.
