Location: Valley Forge, Pa. | I have a rebuilt MDT-7001 but I can't find it's applications. Will it work on a 1960 318 Plymouth? If not, what is the difference, tooth count?
I would like to know before I climb underneath.
Thanks again,
Karl. |

Location: So. Cal | It sounds like a marine starter. I have no idea of the compatibility for it. It does have a 9 tooth gear on it though. |

It sounds like a marine starter. I have no idea of the compatibility for it. It does have a 9 tooth gear on it though.
A Google on MDT-7001 turns up a few hits that suggest that one application was marine but not necessarily all:
" Chrysler Inboard Starters , 3471, st75, 50109, 5311m, mdt7001, 46-124, 46-130, 46-2021"
BUT:
" *12V* ( CW ) STARTING MOTOR WMS PART NUMBER, MDT6103NR
REPLACES NUMBERS, MDT-6001, MDT-7001, MDT-6103, 46-3557 46-124, 46-130, 2875928, 1779955, 1889297, MDT-6103S ( APPLICATIONS ) ( CHRYSLER CORP., AND CHRYSLER MARINE ) ( CW ROTATION WITH A 9 TOOTH GEAR ) * NOTE * ( SOME DE HOUSINGS MAY BE FROM OEM CORES )"
BUT BUT...
"Starter, MDT-7001, 1960 Dodge Passenger Cars, Remanufactured, 1 Year Warranty."
https://www.ebay.com/itm/Starter-MDT-7001-1960-Dodge-Passenger-Cars-...
I really don't know. I just like to search.

Location: Valley Forge, Pa. | Just got my 60 Plymouth with 318 back from inspection. Asked them to change my starter while they had it on the lift. My rebuilt starter MDT-7001 is different. This MDT-7001 mounts with 2 bolts.
It has been 12 years since I removed my starter and didn't even know how many bolts it uses. Apparently my car uses a 3 bolt starter. Is the MDT-7001 for a 6 cyl.?
Is it all about the nose piece or are the whole starters different? In other words, could I drop my starter and change the nose pieces?
I can't find anything on the actual starter components in my parts book only complete starters. The parts book shows an exploded view with code #s but I can find them in the book.
Are they listed in a separate section?
What's the difference in a new mini-starter that fits 1962 318s? |

Location: So. Cal | Mopar really went crazy with the different starters they used. No rhyme or reason for it all, and there is no obvious interchange during these years. You have to look it up to figure it out.
Your '60 Plymouth 318 starter is similar to the truck starter & interchanges with:
'57-'58 Plymouth,Dodge small block & 6 cyl
'57 Firesweep
'57-'59 Dodge truck
'59 Dodge,Plym 6 cylinder
'60 Plym,Dodge 318
As far as swapping noses, it might work. Check the gear to make sure it is the same as well. Just give it a try and see.

Location: So. Cal | What's odd about that interchange though is that I could swear that my '57 truck used 3 bolts, but my '58 325 poly Coronet only had 2 bolts. So something may not be correct with that interchange data. |

I think the major difference is whether the starter solenoid is mounted to the inner fender or right on the starter. The ones with the solenoid on the inner fender had inertia drive bendixes and the ones with the solenoid on the starter use the solenoid to throw the 9 tooth gear into the flywheel ring gear while spinning.
I think the bigger V8s had starters with the solenoid on the starter and the smaller V8s and the 6 cyl engines got the inertia drive starters.
In the 55-58 Mopar Parts catalogue and the 1959 Mopar parts catalogue, the starter assembly is in Section 8-52 as "Starting Motor". The component parts list is very close and is called "STARTING MOTOR ASSEMBLIES COMPONENT PARTS".
I use parts catalogues downloaded from MyMopar.com:

Location: So. Cal | As you can see from the interchange data, just saying V8 isn't specific enough for '60-'61.
6cyl, 318, and big blocks all used different starters during these years. But I can tell you that the proper '60-'61 318 starter used part number 1889260. Find out what the MDT number is for that.

Alex, What is MDU-6003, the 1959 Plymouth and Dodge 6 cylinder and small V8 starter?
(Also in the 59 Parts Catalog)

Location: So. Cal | Another inconsistency is that the interchange data says that '59 6cyl and V8 are different from each other, but the parts list shows them as being the same. So much bad information and confusing data with Chrysler starters! |

Location: So. Cal | There are a couple of starters on Ebay that match the part number & MDU-6003, and they are indeed 3-bolt starters. Here is some of them:

Location: Valley Forge, Pa. | My parts books don't show parts of a starter. Is there someplace in these parts books that I am missing that shows a starter broken down into part #s?
That way at least I could find out what's interchangeable. Maybe I can find a junked 3 bolt and swap noses.
What years did they use 3 bolt starters and do they make a mini to fit that pattern?
Were 6 and 8 blot starter interchangeable. Would a 3 bolt 6 cyl/ work on my low compression 318? |

They should be there, in section 8-52, like this from the 1959 Mopar Parts book:

Here is the info from the 1960 Mopar parts catalogue pdf (to go with the 59 stuff I posted above).

Location: Melbourne, Australia | At the start of this year I purchased a 350 wedge motor and it had this same starter in it. Same MDT-7001, same 1889297 mopar part number. I pulled it as it seem to crank slow but it's replacement cranked at the same speed. its two mounting holes are offset to the centreline of the 9 tooth pinion, unlike the poly starters which are ON the centreline. I have a pic but it's on my phone so will have to work out how to post it later. The rest of the motor still has old fashioned water neck, mopar bolts everywhere, so I'm guessing it hasn't been messed with too much. So my vote is 350 wedge for its application! Colin |

Location: Valley Forge, Pa. | Right now, I am casually searching this as I don't need a starter now but I really would like to have a reliable spare just in case.
I'm guessing most of us know that as well as our starter may be working, there is always the possibility of failure of a 60 year old item and these things get harder to find or rebuilt as time goes along?
As I have just started researching this, I found this from CARiD - "NASTRA #3460 1960 Dodge Polara 5.2/318 starter". $93 [+ $30 core]. What is this? |

Location: Valley Forge, Pa. | IF anyone was interested in this subject. I bought an NOS nose for $50. It is interchangeable. Apparently, like my older GM cars, 12 volt starters were basically the same but different nose housing.
as I recall, Pontiac & Cadillac mounted on the opposite side of the block as Chevy but the rest was the same.
These picts. are after I exchanged the nose pieces.
