Location: McCleary WA | Shortly after purchasing my '57 Suburban wagon in November 2017, I ordered a bunch of parts from Gary Goers including new door seals. I finally got to the point of installing them this weekend and they won't let the door close - they stop it 3/4" out. Since I got them from Gary I assumed they were correct. The originals were long gone, and on my convert the body shop installed them and they worked great, but I don't recall if they looked the same. These are kind of bell shaped, about 3/4" wide and the same height. Can anyone advise if these look correct?

Have you got the seal on the right way, think it's small side to outside.

Location: McCleary WA | I don"t know if it's the right way, or if it's the correct seal. The curved side (bottom in the photo above) seemed to fit into the groove on the door so that's how I put it. I couldn't find any detailed info on how they go on, and I can't remember what we did last time (the perils of aging...). This what it looks like on the door:

Location: Finland | It is always that way imo. With every car I have restored I have been forced to slam the doors the first months. The best would be to use load straps between the doors
and squeeze the seals flat rather a bit beyond with loosened latches. If you do this every evening the issue is soon gone...
There is nothing wrong with the seals or the way they are glued. |

Location: McCleary WA | I will try the strap idea. When I first closed the passenger door hard, the latch jammed. No amount of pushing, pulling, or prodding would release it. In order to better understand how the latch functions I removed the driver's side and examined it closely, then using a long screwdriver was able to pry the right lever and finally get it to unlock. Good thing the glass was not installed yet. I disassembled the latch and replaced the cog wheel with an NOS spare I just got, lubed it well, and hope that will help.
In case you missed my recent post about door latches elsewhere, pick up rear latches from similar 4-door cars when you can. In my case I got an NOS one cheap. You can pop them open and use the cog wheel in your front latches that wear out much faster. LH and RH are not the same, obviously. I had found mine after I had my latches installed and didn't want to pull them again as it's a big job. But now that one is fixed. |

Location: Blackpool, United Kingdom. | Hi Daryl,
It does make a difference which way seal is installed, arrowed shorter side goes to the outside skin, also do you have the moulded top part available from quirey
Thanks Paul.

Location: McCleary WA | Interesting. Apparently I managed to get one on correctly and the other backward. And it was the RH one that was correct and jammed the lock.
As for your second photo, I assume that is item #484 in the old Gary Goers catalog? I have no idea where that goes - any chance you could post a photo showing it in place? I don't recall having that on my convert, or seeing any originals on either it or the wagon when I got them. I'll call Quirey in the morning and see if they have this in stock. I really appreciate your help with this.

Just realised it's for you're wagon, those top seals are only on hardtops and convertibles. |

Location: McCleary WA | Goers catalog says "2 doors and convertibles". I ordered them from Quirey this morning anyway. I'd still like to know where they go. My convert didn't have them. |

Location: McCleary WA | Quirey confirmed that the #484 seals are for hardtops and converts, but they suggested I might want the #437 seals (p. 15 of Goers catalog). I have no idea where those would go either.
I re-installed the incorrectly facing LH seal, removed the latch strikers, and have cargo-strapped the doors closed. We'll see if that helps. |

Location: CA | You might ask John (Big M), he has a restored wagon if memory serves and I'm more than sure he has something in the yard that is in tact enough to serve as an example. |
