i backed the brakes off completely... and felt to see if it was somehow catching... but the pad weren't moving and the reverse locks up immediately when you turn the wheels backwards...

I have had that issue with two mopar fifties cars. It went away when I removed the parking brake drum and inspected and adjusted everything. I had new shoes in both cases
and probably they were too tightly adjusted from the beginning. I didn`t get sure of what was the cause but I got rid of the problem.

I actually removed the whole drum... it locked up when i tried to spin it backwards... The pan is full of fine graphite, and its only been warmed up for 20 minutes..

nah i completely removed the drum, the actual shaft wont turn in reverse, i found a serious amount of crud in the oil pan (it was spotless and only broke the cam in for 20 minutes or so and the bottom of the pan has alot of black in it).
