hi
I have a 1956 plymouth station wagon with fuel gage inaccurate readings. I replaced the existing fuel gage and fuel tank sending unit with NOS but it shows tank empty when there was still several gallons in the tank.
Next, I replaced both with a modern fuel gage mounted under the dash and modern fuel tank sending unit. This new equipment gives less accurate fuel than did the nos parts I removed. I did notice the fuel tank sending unit rod is about 1/3 as long as the nos one. what to do ?
Thanks for your time, advise, and help.
Merry Christmas

Jerry: I think this has been an on-going problem for you for sometime. (Sorry to hear that it wasn't resolved).
The 55-56 Plymouth wagon fuel gauge and fuel level sender need to be a matched pair.
As suggested previously, the proper 56 Plymouth wagon sender is 1641 679.
The gauge is also unique in that it uses a different system than the sedan gauges. There are three wires at the wagon gauge instead of 2 for the sedan gauge and two wires to the sender instead of one
for the sedan. The correct PN for the gauge is 1622 622. Maybe your's was wired up incorrectly? There is wiring and trouble-shooting info below:
