For whatever reasons, the fuel sender and fuel gauges for the 55-56 Mopar wagons are different than those of the sedans. For the sedans (non-wagons), the gauge has two wires and the sender has one. For the wagons, the gauge has three wires and the sender, two wires. As a result the gauge and sender are unique to the wagons.
The upside is the gauge can be calibrated. Here is some information borrowed from the 1955-56 Plymouth and 56 Chrysler Factory Service Manuals (FSMs) that discusses the wiring, testing and calibration of the gauge.

You must be a mind reader!! The last few days I have been meaning to post a query about this same subject. I have a 55 Plymouth wagon which has been converted from original 6v to 12v. The fuel gauge and sender were both faulty when I got it so I replaced gauge and sender with a 2 part dcpd replacement that uses only a single wire but that goes from full to empty when still 3/4 full. I have now fixed the original sender and purchased a new original gauge and before installing am trying to work out how to handle the voltage change as both 55 and 56 use the same part numbers. I have the 55 manual and it has the info you have posted but need to review the 56 info. Thanks for what you have posted, will check and see how I go. I presume Plymouth and Dodge have same part numbers? Will post what I have. Jim

I don't fully understand why the 55 6V and 56 12V Plymouth senders and gauges are the same but it seems they are. And they are the same for both 55-56 Plymouths and Dodges.
1622 622 Gauge (note: Note 1 relates to a filter (a 5 Micro Farad capacitor to remove "noise" from the gauge points opening and closing, interferring with the radio signal "NOTE 1: For 1956 model specify 1-1571 839 Filter"
