Hi I have a 1955 dodge Coronet converted to 12 volt with an alternator fitted ,The car has been rewired but the voltmeter has not been wired up it is the original black 1955 gauge I am told if it was wired I would just need to swap the poles over however it is not wired up and I need to know how it has to be wired
The gauge is in working condition
But when tested with a permanent live wire connected and a wire to ground it blew a fuse
Any help appreciated thanks Phil

If you are using the original gauge it is an ammeter and it needs to be wired in line in the power feed wire, NOT GROUNDED. What is the output amps of your alternator? The original gauge was never meant to handle more than 30-40 amps and most likely your alt. supplies more than that and would burn up the gauge. You need to buy a gauge that would fit in your panel and handle more than the output of your alt.

You might have fried the gauge doing that. Just eliminate the ammeter and install an external volt meter or convert your existing ammeter to a volt meter. (Google search)
