Location: Spring Hill, KS | My friend is looking at a 59 DeSoto that is missing the VIN plate in the left lower A pillar. The car was repainted and the plate was removed for whatever reason. Serious red flag and it probably won't be able to be registered in KS as is. The seller has a title that matches the data plate under the hood by the right hinge. Are there any other VIN locations on this car? |

If so, then the location is correct. In '59, the VIN was incorporated in the data plate and did not appear on the A-post, despite the holes being there. My reference point is Dodge, where that was done on all but CA-built vehicles. So I'm assuming that Desoto did the same thing. Ron |

Firesweeps were built at Dodge plants and did not have the serial number on the door post as did the Fireflites, Firedomes, and Adventurers. |

Location: Hershey PA | Fred and Ron are correct. The National Desoto Club has been plotting the 59 Desoto production for 25 years. About 15 years ago we discovered that there were 2 empty holes by the driver's side door hinge with the VIN noted in the top center of the data plate. M412 1xxxxx translates as 1959 (M) Desoto(4) Firesweep(1) made at Dodge Main (2) 1xxxxx sequence. The empty hole question has been verified since then as we add Firesweeps to our list. The breqkdown of the VIN is noted in the parts book the Collision parts books and other publications and can be submitted to the DOT. If possible, please post the VIN of the car in question |
