| Hi all. I am Mopar newbie who recently purchased a 1961 Fury with 26,500 original miles. I am looking for some parts and some much needed info. I am having problems with the rear brakes locking up. I have heard lots of people talking about upgrading to later drums/discs, etc, but I really would like to keep her as close to stock as possible. That being said, if she did come with power brakes, it looks like someone has already swapped out the original master cylinder and booster for some generic after market set up. Can you guys help with deciphering the broadcast sheet? Also, the original owner put in an after market AC unit that blows cold, but won’t allow the ash tray or glove box to open, so yes there are already originality issues. Other than that, I really just need a dash speaker grill (who doesn’t?)
Thanks! |

Could you post the data tag picture of your car, please?
I need to match digital codes to the letter codes on it;
It is located behind left hood hinge…

Thanks for sharing, Tim!
Could you tell me please: what the three digits exactly shown on the upper left corner of tag?
I highlighted them by yellow;
Are these 353?

| Hi Igor,
I will check when I get back home. I am in Montreal now. Under 612 it says “sold”, so I guess it was special ordered by the original owner. I have a quick question, though, Under the heading “power” on the broadcast sheet, there is a number “1” under “string”. Does this mean there was a string of power options available as a package? What does string mean?Thanks! |

When you get back home, it will be easier for us to try to help you, if you scanned or took a better photo the broadcast sheet (and then resized to something like 1024 x 768, like I have done - poorly, from your posted image).
It is difficult to see what you see without a better, larger, sharper, image of the broadcast sheet.
Hope you enjoy Montreal.

Yes, that’s right – the code 612 is a sold car. Thank you for correction.
And just to the left – the slot code 61 – NC SERVICE – New Car Service;
611 = New Car Service with Gasoline
619 = New Car Service without Gasoline
Not a “STRING” – this is a “STEERING” abbreviated – the code 291 is POWER STEERING availability…
If there is nothing (blank) above “STEERING”, the car has manual steering…
Other Power Options Description:
LOCK 298 = Power Door Locks (Electric-Operated for Imperial and Vacuum-Operated for other brands)
BRAKE 292 = Power Brakes – your car has not equipped with
SEAT 293 = Power Seat 4- or 6- Way
WIND 294 = Power Windows
GATE 295 = Power Tail Gate Window – Station Wagon option
STRING 291 = Power Steering – your car has it…
BTW: Next to the power group column is a CLOCK 299 = Electric Clock; your car has not factory electric clock, but I see it on the instrument cluster on the picture above…
Electric clock may be included in the accessory group (301 thru 309) also, but your car has not any accessory group as well…
The column TRANS 28 decipher the transmission code (as you already guessed); your car equipped with Torqueflite, code 283;
But you are probably didn’t know the 1961 PLYMOUTH TRANSMISSIONS AVAILABILITY – If you are interested:
281 = Transmission – 3 Speed Manual
282 = Transmission – 2 Speed Automatic Powerflite
283 = Transmission – 3 Speed Automatic Torqueflite for V8 Engines
284 = Transmission – 3 Speed Manual – Heavy Duty for V8 Engines
287 = Transmission – 3 Speed Automatic Torqueflite for L6 Engines
And the last:
Here the reference to the 1961 Plymouth trim codes, published by Nathan (aka Powerflite)– you might be interested too:
