Hello,
maybe a stupid question but before it ends in an desater i will ask.
On my New Yorker i have removed my rear axle complete to clean the body underneath.
My lifted the car about 1 meter and use an hydraulic car jack under der Differential. Every bold was loosen and the complete axle with leafsprings an shocks lifted down.
I wondered about the heavy weight - uups

Now i asked myself : how should i re - install ? Also the complete axle ( with 20 helping hands ) or disassemble axle and springs ?
What your expierience or way of work ?
Thank you
Roger

Either way works, but lifting the axle over the springs can scratch your new paint on the rearend so you have to be more careful with it. Doing it that way is easier with 2 people, but I've done it by myself many times. It's just harder, and requires more steps. This method is a lot easier if one brake drum & backing plate is removed first, so if those are coming off anyway, don't put them back on until afterward. But definitely the easier way is to release the rear shackles and let the springs down first. But that is assuming that the rear shackles are easy to remove. Sometimes they refuse to come apart without a lot of coercion.

Hy Nathan,
thank you. I removed the whole axle just to clean and paint the Body underside. For this, i doesn`t have to remove the drums. Not yet . The bolts in the bushings doesnt move or when i turn them i think the rubber inside will die.
So i removed the 4 small bolts at the brackets at each end of the springs . This works. But i think its not easy to reattach those bolts again when the axle is out of position and hangs on a jack
Maybe i should use two hydraulic jacks and 2 friends to help me. I`m also afraid that i make some paint damiáge when i tried to lift the axle on the fixed springs. Even the trims - i think i will never found other ones in Germany
Thanks a lot
Roger

Roger, I made two sturdy wooden blocks with T feets and axle diameter halvmoon cut-outs. Adapt to the near needed height. Lift up the rear axle with a floor jack and lower the rear axle onto the stands. Then mount the leaf spring packages in the front, lift up the rear leafsprings and mount to the rear axle. Now it's easy to lift up the rear axle with the leaf springs for to connect the rear shakles. You might have to do a support for the pinion end to better control the angle of the rear axle.

I use this method because normally I work alone, no heavy lifts.

If you removed the rear axle and leaf springs as an assembly, the "flat rate" was to reinstall it is to leave it as an assembly.

Move the assembly under the back of the car. use jack or jacks to lift the front of the leaf springs up into their mounts on the body - both side should be lifted evenly. Attach the front of the leaf springs to the body. now jack up the center of the axle to raise the rear of the springs into position and secure as required. Finish reinstalling various small components/connections. Voila!

Wizard,
This is a simple but fantastic idea! I have a lot of wood here at home - I will do it this way

Thank you very much!

the rear axle is back in place !
@wizard : with the help of the wooden blocks it is really easy to handle the axle.
@all : I had made a small mistake, maybe because it is my first car with leaf springs.
My way was to loosen all the bolts front and rear and lift the whole assembly down, and I thought that reassembling it the other way is the same.
But I never thought about fixing the front bracket first and then lifting the rear part of the spring - it's really easy if you know how
And with the wooden blocks it's much easier because you can easily rotate the axle.
Many thanks

Roger

Great going Roger! I have a lot of wooden tools for to ease removal and installation of the rear axle, exhaust system, fuel tank and much more. It's cheap extra hands when working alone.
