This is what I know (or *think* I know) so far:

D62 = Coronet with 6 cylinder engine
D63-1 = Coronet with 8 cylinder engine
D63-2 = Royals
D63-3 = Custom Royals

First Digit = Engine Type

6 = the Flat head six

8 = V8

Second Digit = trim line

1 = Coronet as in D62 or D63-1
2 = Royal as in D63-2
3= Custom Royal as in D63-3

Third Digit = actual body type:

2 = 2 dr sedan
3 = 2dr convertible
5 = 4 dr sedan
6 = 2 dr hardtop
? = 4 dr hardtop (help!!)
? = 2 dr wagon (suburban) (need help!!)
? = 4dr wagon (suburban) (need help!!)

so examples of these combos that I can confirm so far include:

612 = Coronet 6 cylinder 2 dr sedan (confirmed by an eBay Auction that showed the cowl tag)

812 = Coronet V8 2dr sedan (confirmed by Ralf in Finland)
815 = Coronet V8 4dr sedan (confirmed by Norman H.)

I have some questions about the 2384 on the bottom right of the body tag, and what the heck is the S5? is it a non standard rear axle ratio? it doesnt seem to have anything different than any other southampton. Would there be an axle tag hanging or a stamping somewhere on the center section? worst case I can count the # of wheel turns.

The B/T lower line is easy to decode, but the M codes are puzzling.
This is even more difficult when we say that the tag codes are probably not the same as the IBM card codes.
A 1956 tag contains the codes M1 to M9. The 1957-59 tag is slightly different - the M7, M8, M9 codes are gone.
Instead of them there is a sequence number.

It's hard to decode, but it's not impossible. More research is needed.
I think the same scheme was used for all brands, maybe even all four years.
The factory had to have a system that was easy for workers.
The body tag contains less data than the IBM card and the build sheet.
On the 56 Chrysler / De Soto the body tag is hardly available after the brake booster mounted.

The whole tag have a slightly different layout than many examples that is shown in other threads.

The Vin Tag was on the car when i bought it .
Little things about the car lead me to believe it may be painted .

Equipment looks like A7- B2 -J6 (faint stamp) - S2 - V2 - Y1 - Z3.

Of these, I am reasonably sure of:

A7: Torqueflite automatic
B2: Power brakes
Z3: Variable-speed windshield wipers

BDY 732 = 2-door hardtop

TRM (trim) looks like 235, which I think involves red vinyl and some colour of cloth.

PNT (paint) PL4: I think, looking at the '61 Dodge paint chip chart, this is a 2-tone of P (Vermillion) over L (Silver Grey Poly).

Vehicle ? is 7312330522, from which I get:

7: Dodge Lancer
3: 770-series 2-door hardtop
1: 1961 model
2: Hamtramck Assembly plant
330522: Serial number

How do I tell which engine I originally had without a data plate? It's not listed anywhere on the card.
