FS: Extremely Scarce Slant-6 Analysis From 1961

In 1961, General Motors bought a 1961 Dodge Lancer with an aluminum 225 engine. They pulled the engine, put it in one of their dyno rooms, and did an extremely detailed analysis of every aspect of its operation and performance. Every variable and parameter was reported, down to the formulation of the fuel used for the test runs. Power and torque, fuel consumption, exhaust backpressure, spark advance, detonation thresholds, volumetric efficiency, carburetor flow, crankcase blowby volume, friction horsepower, etc, were all carefully measured and plotted in a 36-page document. Very much more detailed information than Chrysler ever published on the subject.

Once I learned of this report's existence, it took me about two decades of persistent trying to get hold of it before I finally succeeded—just in time; a few months after I finally got my paws on it, the GM technical archive was decimated. Everything older than 15 years was discarded. Not digitized, not microfilmed, not offered for sale; it was all shredded and trashed.

When I finally got the manilla envelope containing the report, I was overjoyed until I actually opened it. It was a Photostat (primitive predecessor of the photocopy) and it had not aged well. It was barely legible—the letters and numbers and plot grids and lines could be made out, one little bit at a time, by putting a very strong light behind the page and using a magnifier.

Sometimes barely-legible documents have to be restored because there's no other source for information needed for a legal matter or other serious business. So, there are document restoration experts. Their services do not come cheaply, but by accepting a lowest-priority status, with my document worked on in dribs and drabs as time allowed, I was able to get a price that was not completely out of the question.

A year and a half later, the result proved worth the wait and cost. This guy brought the document back from the dead—sincerely. Every letter and number, every image, every chart and plot grid and line, all faithfully restored or reproduced, clear and sharp with perfect fidelity and better-than-original legibility (plots of various engine characteristics have different-colour lines for each parameter, so you don't have to guess which plot curve goes with which axis label, for example). Even the images are surprisingly good quality.

It's nicely coil-bound. Pics here (slightly out of focus, sorry; older phone camera in basement light) show the front page and two others.

$39 plus postage from British Columbia, Canada. Please send me a PM if you'd like to buy.

FS: Extremely scarce 1961 Valiant Teardown Test

There was an outfit in the UK called MIRA, the Motor Industry Research Association. It was formed after World War II as a central research nexus for the British automobile industry, and over the years it built up comprehensive test facilities with the goal of helping British automakers become more competitive globally. Over the years its mission and focus shifted and drifted, and although they didn't shred and trash their archives like GM did (see my other ad), they closed it down: the materials still exist in deep storage, but they might as well not — there's no staff, no budget, no access at all, to anyone, for any reason. So I was lucky to pry this report out of 'em when I did; if I'd waited another year or two it would've been "oh, dear…terribly sorry, old chap!".

From time to time MIRA bought cars, tested them extensively and tore them down to see how they were made and how they tended to break. One such car was a 1961 Valiant.

When I say they "tested extensively", I mean this MIRA test of the '61 Valiant includes mindbending levels of detail. Aside from all the normal things you'd expect (acceleration, fuel economy, handling, etc), heater performance was measured and plotted in detail. So was dust and water entry. So were numerous kinds of noise. And the glass thickness, and the spring tension force of the windshield wipers against the glass. And brake force (main and parking brakes), cold and hot. And aerodynamics, and driver sightlines, torsional stiffness, alternator output, suspension forces, and much more, all to an astounding degree of precision. About the only thing they didn't measure is the pitch and sound pressure level from the horn!

And when I say they "tore it down", I mean they took the car apart down to the last nut, bolt, screw, and clip, then dissected and analyzed the pieces. They subjected trim parts to various kinds of corrosive environments and recorded the results in words and pictures. They chased down every crack and creak that developed in body panels and welds and gaskets, photographed and documented them. They weighed and measured everything.

It's like they put the car through an exhaustive battery of tests (including the exhaust and the battery), then shot it and did a thorough autopsy. This test makes any car test you've ever seen look like a book report by a not-very-bright 3rd-grader who wrote it on the bus the morning it was due, with the flu and without having read the book. Seriously, it's difficult to overstate the thoroughness of this report, which runs to a hundred and six pages, a few of which are shown here.
$61 plus postage from British Columbia, Canada. Please send me a PM.

56 Mopar cars featured in the June 2023 issue of Collectible Automobile

.
I saw this on eBay while I was in France last week at I thought that the asking price was ridiculous and decided to wait and buy the magazine when I got home.

SO I bought it today, thinking that it would be maybe CDN$6.95 or maybe CDN$8.95. I bought some other things and when I saw the total, I did a second take. Wow. The Canadian price was CDN$14.95 which is basically the eBay price in US $ converted to CDN$ (but with no shipping). In fact now that I see the US$ price on the eBay magazine (US$11.95), eBay price (not including shipping) is a good price.

Doesn't matter. I have the magazine and from a quick look, they have done a decent job of talking about the 1956 Mopar cars. Naturally, I was looking to see what they screwed up regarding the 1956 Dodge D500s, but they did a pretty good job. Nothing outrageously wrong. Maybe something new that I didn't know about.

The cover photo is the same colour combo as one of my uncles had back in the day as a 4 dr 56 Custom Royal hardtop. Same colour combo as Depislon Dave's car I believe.

My uncle's car was one of the inspirations in my purchase of my 56 Dodge D500 4dr Custom Royal sedan so I had to have the magazine.

This:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/155543084249?_trkparms=amclksrc%3DITM%26aid%3D111001%26algo%3DREC.SEED%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20180105095853%26meid%3Ddfba2cd7cf884b56abf118e2dc64b92b%26pid%3D100903%26rk%3D4%26rkt%3D20%26sd%3D184953658730%26itm%3D155543084249%26pmt%3D0%26noa%3D1%26pg%3D2510209&_trksid=p2510209.c100903.m5276
