Forward Look NON-Technical Discussions -> Miss Belvedere - The Unearthed Tulsarama Plymouth! | Message format |

September '07 Car & Driver Page 42 RE: Miss Belvedere "... what once was a brand-new '57 Plymouth Belvedere (above) and is now pretty much a dung beetle on wheels. (Okay, let's face it - they were dung beetles to begin with.)" Those words and a few more together in a paragraph constitute ALL the coverage C&D chose to give Miss Belvedere. It's not even a story about the car... It's part of a half-assed set up for their 10-Best Awards contest. (On a side note... I don't regularly read C&D anyway. This copy was left in the mailbox by mistake and I couldn't resist thumbing through before tossing it back in the mail. Such marginal, biased coverage of automotive history reminds me why I stick to OLD CAR magazines only.) -NM Edited by Nathan D. Manning 2007-08-08 1:52 PM

I can't think of any decent "Hachette Filipacchi" brand magazines anyhow. I'll stick with Primedia (they bought out emap, who bought out Petersen Publishing) anyday. Motor Trend- primedia.

However, I doubt that their target-market-children even know WHAT that referenced-critter is! I would be curious to know how the genius-writer came-up with that term, and I wonder if he DRIVES a Dung-Beetle???

Expert Posts: 2338 Location: central oklahoma! | THAT hit the nail on the head, jimmy!! it's all about the advertising income, NOT informing the readers. the one i simply CANNOT figure out is consumer reports. they have no advertisers, yet they are the most BLATANTLY anti-american mouthpiece out there. and it's not just limited to cars, either. i wonder what they were like 50 years ago. Extreme Veteran Posts: 370 Location: Mishawaka, IN. | Hey Dave Were they even around then? and if they were, you can bet they wouldn't bash American made products 50 years ago. If they did they wouldn't be around this long. Jimmy

Expert Posts: 2338 Location: central oklahoma! | according to the info on wikipedia, their first issue was january 1936. may have been "nader's raiders" that turned them against detroit. it would be interesting to see what they said about american cars back in the 50's. i would think they would have praised hudson for the hornet, and rambler for the rebel. maybe they also liked the tucker; i still get romantic thoughts over it! in any event, i just can't understand why they can't ever bring themselves to say anything good about an american made car, or any other product for that matter. there's a bible salesman in the oklahoma city area who has a crown victoria with over 800,000 miles on it that's still putting along; tell HIM americans don't make good cars! I've got a few issues of theirs, and their road/performance testing was impressive. Crap & Poser began arond 1960.

Davis left, as Editor, to found his own mainstream rag; "Automobile".

Expert Posts: 2308 Location: The Bat Cave, Fairborn, OH | I haven't read "Crap & Duped" since the 1970s and it doesn't sound like I've missed much. I enjoyed some of David E. Davis' writing but the slant (pun intended) of the magazine towards the Japanese towards the end of the Carter era turned me off. American cars of the 1970s were frankly not assembled as well as the Japanese cars of the day, and they deserved to get criticized for it but Detroit has come a long way since those days... too bad "Crap & Duped" writers won't admit it. My daily driver is a 2001 Ford Taurus that I bought with 99,000 miles on it in 2004 for $5,000. It now has 200,000 miles on it and the heads of the V-6 engine have never been off. Yet it runs as strong as a new car and still passes its smog test with flying colors. Take that, "Mr. Opportunity" (Honda). Edited by 58 DESOTOS RULE 2007-08-28 7:32 PM

Take that, "Mr. Opportunity" (Honda). Hello from another Taurus owner - "go fast red", 1999 SE, 3.0 Duratec w/192,000 miles. Bought it two and a half years ago with 110,000 on the clock. Runs like a scalded dog (for a V6). Nice and clean inside and out. Durable little bugger, I drive it 100 miles a day to and from work. Last good car magazine I read was years ago. I seem to recall a regularly running CARtoon and something about a warthog who was trying to put slicks on the front end of his 1966 Olds Toronado.

Board Moderator Posts: 3186 Location: The not-so-great, dirty-white North ( Michigan) | Neil... I agree that Carp and Drivel lost their edge when David E. Davis left. Although I have had personal contact with several of the contributors since then (Csaba Csere and Jean Lindamood being examples), I agree that they tend to "validate" those products that seem to advertise heavily in their magazine. I think Davis tended to have a much more open mind regarding the vehicular trade than the present staff. I also think that the present staff is much more "full of themselves" than the staff of the late 60s though early to mid-80s.....

If you want to read about what is going on and find out new ideas as well as real world tech stay the HE11 away from this sh!t. Rod and Kustom, "Ol Skool Rodz, Mopar Action, Mopar Muscle, HOTROD, Popular Hot Rodding, Car Craft. and Collectable Automobile are some good ones to start with. With most of them you have the best mix of new/old world tech plus some of those are cluture frindly to those of us who are NOT purists.

I figured out, from the grade school grammer & syntax, that the entire rag/mag was produced by one person, and that he used iterations of his own name, to create nom de plumes for the various article-writers in the issues!
