Member Posts: 39 Location: Long Island, NY | Hello to all. My name is Art. I'm in Long Island, NY. Just puchased a 56 Dodge Suburban Wagon. Car is done ,but has some problems. Going to use AJJ brake adapters for front discs. Car has 315 engine but seems to have excessive blue smoke from drivers side. I saw on a post with Ashley about installing a later V-8/trans and would like to do the same. I bought car for long distance driving towing a boat. Does anyone make drop-in motor mounts for a 318/340/360 motor or do the mounts have to be custom fabricated? Also looking at trans with overdrive, can't remember number, but would work with carbed smallblock. OK, just saw non technical discussion area so enough for now and will try to post pic of car. Expert Posts: 4533 Location: Ripon, WI | Actually, a 318/360 is really easy to bolt in. You will need a 62-65 transmission to use the pushbuttons. The can style mounts should bolt right to the poly block... as long as the 315 isn't too different than the poly 318 on the outisde. As for trans mount, you will have to do some slight mods. nothing too difficult. How many miles on the engine? sure it isn't just valve seals? Edited by safetymike77 2008-09-12 9:25 PM

Member Posts: 39 Location: Long Island, NY | Hi, Thanks for info. Not going to pull just yet. Need to replace waterpump and then try to run for awhile to see if smoke will clear up. Supposedly engine was rebuilt about 12.000 miles ago. Even so, would like to put in later motor for better reliability for long trips, etc. I saw a post about late model overdrive trans and using my pushbutton setup and pics of setup looked real good.

Location: Parts Unknown | Where did you get the idea that a later model engine / trans is more reliable ? If you dial that machine in right, it will serve you as faithfully as anything else for many, many miles. We have a 56 four door wagon much like yours. Beautiful car !

Member Posts: 39 Location: Long Island, NY | Thanks to all who responded so far. An update as of now, fixed brake problem, shoes too tight, installed another waterpump, and car is back together and running. Still smokes, blue, out of drivers side. Had running for a good 20 minutes at idle, then revved up and smoked more. Going to try changing oil and adding Lucas oil treatment and see if it gets any better. It does run very smooth and is pretty quiet. If I could get the smoke problem cleared up, I would register and start driving. Can't wait to do that. This car came from Tucson, AZ. I have found this car to be 99% rustfree. I hope to keep it that way. I'm looking forward, or is it forward looking to taking the car to some shows, and getting a trailer hitch on it to tow my 1955 Century Palamino Mahoghany outboard boat. Anyone got a hitch laying around? Art. (Palamino 001.jpg) Attachments ---------------- Palamino 001.jpg (62KB - 165 downloads)

Expert Posts: 1508 Location: new york | Nice car I have to agree that motor should have no problem towing your boat! I had a 56 dodge 3 tone grey, yellow and white with the 315 V8 and its was plenty power full and with power steering was a pleasure to drive I wish I still had it ! Good luck with your new car and welcome to the crew! HAPPY MOTORING! Victor.

Location: The Mile High City | Fantastic '56 wagon, Art! Welcome aboard. The boat is nifty too - what a combination Burning oil on the right side only...doesn't sound like there is just too much oil in there. Unless it just smokes when you are parked at the curb and the crown of the street drives the oil to the right side! Wouldn't that be nice And a two door wagon to boot!
