Condition:

This is a "pretty much" original 1958 Plymouth Belvedere sport coupe with it's original interior and original paint (iceberg white roof and canyon gold body). It shows 95,300 miles on the odometer as of today. If you read Old Cars Price Guide this car has a split personality. The passenger side and the front are in condition four while the driver side and the back are in condition three. The best thing about the car is the interior, which is in condition two. The floor pans and trunk pan are solid and rust free. I repaired a rust spot in the trunk which was bigger than a golf ball but smaller than a tennis ball by cutting out the rust and placing a fiberglass patch in. Normally, I would consider this a bad repair, but the hole was small enough that I think it is adequate (and I am pretty critical).

The front fenders are rusted through in the eyebrows. The passenger side has rust through in the bottom of the front fender, the rocker, and the quarter fore and aft of the rear wheel well. The driver side is not bad, with a few rust bubbles starting to form in the rear quarter aft of the wheel well and a small area of rust through under the stone guard in front of the wheel well.

The engine is a 318 with a powerpak (four barrel and dual exhaust). It runs well, has a bit of blow by and burns oil. It drips a bit of oil when it is hot, but not a bunch. Torqueflite transmission shifts fine and does not leak. Brakes are all reconditioned, but are the original total-contact drums. No power steering, no power brakes, no power windows, no power seats. Original options for the car are the powerpak, safety group, sportone inserts, and back-up light delete. The car is complete with the exception of rear end caps for the headliner.

I drive the car every summer and I drove the car to work today. The car runs and drives well. The car has some electrical quirks: I have to press the gas pedal down to turn the starter motor, gas gauge doesn't work, clock doesn't work, dome light is out, horn doesn't work, and the push button lights work intermittently. All other controls, gauges and the radio work well and operate as they should. I have owned the car since 2001 and I have complete records from my ownership. The original paint is thin, but reflective again. The finish now beads water, but I wax it frequently to keep the shine up. There are little dings here and there all over the body, but no serious dents.

I enjoy driving the car as it is. However, I think I have pressed the "original" label to my absolute limit. I think it may take some adjustments for both the new owner and the car to achieve another balance, but if you can achieve that balance - the car is ready to enjoy and drive for the summer and can be enjoyed and driven for years to come. If the new owner is not concerned with originality, then let the restoration begin - to whatever level you want. All the car's flaws are readily visible and fully disclosed to the best of my ability.

What I have done to the car:

Five new correct gum-dipped Firestone wide white wall pneumatic bias-ply tires from Coker
New exhaust pipes and mufflers
New front butt rest with correct, matching fabric and vinyl
New arm rest pads
New clear seat covers
New correct carpet with original heel pad
Rebuilt carburetor (twice)
New incorrect fuel pump
New fuel line
Rebuilt and reconditioned gas tank with drain plug
Rebuilt total-contact drum brakes on all four wheels
Rechromed rear bumper
Added rechromed front and rear bumper guards with all correct hardware and black-painted undersides
Installed new dash pad from Just Dashes
Replaced original steering wheel with optional two-tone wheel and optional horn ring.
Replaced original back-up light delete plate (damaged) with incorrect copy
Waxed the holy bejeepers out of the original, totally oxidized paint.

What comes with the car:

Clear, State of Colorado title + receipt
Set of front fenders from a 1957 Plymouth in good condition with metal eyebrow patches
Front and rear bumper
Extra wheel cover and a set of hubcaps
Original wheel and horn ring
Extra optional horn ring
Extra fender ornaments and miscellaneous trim
All records and literature (owner's manual, repair manual, etc.)
Extra trunk mats (not too good)
Car cover
Correct carburetor and steel fuel line

Exclusions:

I think I will keep the four-point seatbelt. I will replace it with the lap belt that matches the passenger side. I don't think these lap belts were original to the car. I believe that they were purchased from Sears in the 1960's. I will also keep the license plates, frames, and covers.

Price:

$14,000 USD. $500 non-refundable deposit due immediately then we need to close the deal within a reasonable time. You can come out and kick the tires and drive the car around. If you don't like it, we won't do the deal - but I'll keep the $500. I don't want to haggle with the price. I go back and forth on this, but I think the car is well worth every penny in comparison with similar cars.  If you ever wanted to own one of these, now is the time!  If I wind up advertising in Hemmings and on eBay, I will list it for $15,000.  Please send me a personal message if you are interested.

Thanks,

Mike

From the pictures, it looks like the rust is in very fixable areas, you should get your price. Nice car!

Very very very nice car
I had never seen that color combo before on a '58 Plymouth, and my, does it look fabulous !!

It is also a great survivor, because if I understood well, no body work was ever done on her.
So, even if corrosion is present on certain spots, it shows that some '58 Plymouth were able to go through the trials of time without too much problems !

One picture puzzles me though : the undercarriage one where we see the fuel tank.
We see a "L" shaped steel bar bolted to the frame and going to the back of the frame.
What is the use of that bar ? I do not have it on mine ....
Is that part of a towing package ?

Hi, Vincent:

I suspect it may have been some sort of strengthening for towing. The original back-up light delete plate had a cicular hole in it like a hole that may have accommodated a pigtail for towing. However, there was no hitch on the car when I bought it and not much other evidence of towing capability other than the L iron and the hole in the delete plate. I have heard that you could get a hitch that mounts on the bumper without drilling holes in the bumper or the frame. Sounds risky to me.

Oh, and you are correct - no evidence of body work or accidents on this one!

Thanks! I have it for sale for $14,000 - I go back and forth on whether that is ridiculously expensive for this car or a good deal! It has a lot of flaws, but they are all out in the open.

Joe and Erik both had very good questions about the car: I took some photos of corrosion on the deck where the c-pilar ends. Also, Joe asked about the inner rockers. When I run my hand on the back of the rockers, under the car - everything feels fine. However - As I look inside one of the rust spots on the passenger side rocker just below the rear corner of the passenger door, I see corroded metal inside the rocker.

I drove Mikes car recently, although it's not perfect it is worth every penny he is asking for it. Not to often you see an all orginal car like this. You know exactly what your getting. I agree, the orginal paint scheme is great on this car.

A few years ago, it would have been ridiculously expensive, now, I think it is a fair deal, I imagine you have been flooded with emails and post messages on this one. I'm not trying to down play anyones cars popularity, but it seems like the two most desired forward look cars are 58 Plymouths and 59 Dodges, the two door hardtops maybe even more so, because most people feel convertibles are out of their price range to start with.

Hi, James:

Yep, a nickel ain't worth a dime anymore! I kind of hope my Plymouth keeps pace with the price of gas. I know my paycheck sure hasn't! I have had some very tempting offers so far, but I will try to stick it out just a while longer.

Joe Caldwell "Christine's Revenge" from Harrison, New York, agreed to purchase the car. If Joe decides he does not want the car for any reason, Erik Peterson "57Belvie" from the Great State of Washington, has agreed to buy the car in Joe's stead. I had to apologize to Erik: both offers came in nearly at the same time, but I had talked to Joe on the phone first. Joe had expressed interest when he saw the car on the Rocky Mountain Region page. I will miss this car very much! Thank you all.

Hello to all from New York!!!! I want to thank Mike for the honest way he does buisness. Fortunatly I saw the car prior to most including Mr. Erik Peterson. I just want to say this car will NOT BE PAINTED RED/WHITE although I love the Christine Plymouth's. I currently am building a Christine with a blown 392 Hemi for a cover of a major magazine along with Keith Gordon. This car when done will be at SEMA as well. The 58 is an absolute dream come true for me. This car will be 100% original and you all will be proud. I want to thank Mike Sutherland for his honest buisness dealings and apologize to Erik and anyone who did not get the Belvy. This car will not be for sale with me god willing. Thanks to my friends Mike S., Jimmy and John from NJ,Johnny G from Florida, John big M auto, and Tim Lidl from North Dekota. Thanks again, God Bless Joe Caldwell- Christine's Revenge

I don't mind red Plymouths, they are pretty, but what I really like are Torreodor red Savoys with a black roof and side spear, it dosen't get much sharper than that.

Yep, Joe is the new owner and all that needs to happen now is the safe transport of the car from Colorado to New York. It is funny how many offers I have had on the car since Joe bought it. I think he could probably sell it for a profit if he wanted to, but after talking with him - I think he will own and enjoy this car for a long time to come! I am going to miss it very, very much! I hope Joe will keep me and all of us informed about this wonderful car and everything that he does to it.

Agreed! I couldn't have another car anyway. My Corolla still has that nice new car smell and only 1800 or 1900 miles! I'm not bragging, I'm merely stating why I really don't need another car.

Hehe is it me or does every 57/8 Plymouth thread ends on the red/white subject ? To me it's a little bit funny...coming from a country where choosing a colour of a car in that era was impossible and even was a thing that could lead to not having a car ( as all the examples available were not the color you wanted, you had a choice, take what's there or go wait in a row again), it's strange to pursue the same uniformisation in a country which offered a rainbow of colours for cars. Ours were mostly yellow or greyish white, and for a dude too young to remember 1957, it must seem that there was restriction "you can have it in any 2 tone colours cheme you want as long as it's red with white"

Hi axelfoley, Listen I have a Christine that will be at SEMA as well as on a cover of a major magazine as one of the best in the country. I will have about $130K. , So I agree long live Christine Plymouth's, however an original 58 Plymouth will always be worth the same or more as time goes on. So lets not insult other 58 Plymouth owners who have awesome cars. Best regards, Joe

I am a bit of a traditionalist: for me, if the data plate matches the color of the car, fine; otherwise, you have to consider subtracting the cost of converting it back.

Wow, she's a beauty! Too bad you had to sell her off! Hopefully, she'll have a good new home. (You would think I'm talking about a pet, rather than a car!) Haha.
