Location: Under the X in Texas | That would be a 566 for the body style indicating the 300C hardtop. The convertible was 563. Not every code relevant to the car appears on the data plate; several are only on the IBM card that built the car. Chrysler Historical or the 300 Club can do a full decode as they have microfiche of the IBM cards from which the cars were built.
If you would like a 60 plus page 300C restoration Handbook showing all codes and far more information, I authored the book almost 20 years ago and it is self-published so it has had innumerable edits and updates. It is the only 300 Letter Car restorer's manual. PM me with questions. |

The car is in parts,99% complete..orig paint..no rust!!!
Ididnt believe it first but there are no rust...look at the doors..unbeliveable!

The red numbers matches the numbers from tag.
Also took pic of door jambs,def untouched.
But lot of price winner 300c doesnt have painted door latches and strikers...

Location: bishop, ca | The door latches and strikers are supposed to be painted, just like your is, Mikael.
Because the latch receives some contact and loses a bit of its paint, some restorers are afraid to paint those
items, for fear of losing some paint on them.
Same thing with trunk latches and hood 'catches'; often you'll see them in natural finish instead of being painted.

Location: bishop, ca | Mikael, you should remove both doors' latch mechanisms and look at their inner/lower/hidden gear sets' condition.
Those 'hidden' gears' condition bears no relationship to the probably-excellent condition of the visible upper-exposed
latch gears.

Maybe not a miswriting,maybe the first writing means something?
No buildsheet found above glove box...

It had red and white numbers.

Note how the parts number was corrected, from 409-1506, to 523-431; makes you wonder how/when the mistake was
found, and what the assembly line had to do to correct the installation, to reflect the proper coding.
Although somewhat similar in style, the handwriting is different in those numbers, so a different person (with an orange crayon)
discovered and corrected the screw up; his marking-offs' style indicates that he wasn't too happy to have
found the mistake.
This writing is on the underside of the glove box?
Those numbers almost certainly confirmed how the dashboard was to be assembled and painted, because no one else would
ever have been able to see and take note of those numbers, except for someone creating the dash board features.

The last writing with the red crayon matches the numbers on the body tag.

Location: Under the X in Texas | Note the 523 on the bottom of the glove box is also on the data plate as the date the cars was SCHeduled to be built. It is the month (5) May, followed by the date; 23rd day of the month. This 523 then is also the beginning of the sequence number which becomes the shipping order number. Thus on May 23rd this was the 431st car to be loaded up for truck transport.
The original number that was Xed out was a change or an error and it is highly doubtful that anything more complicated than that needs to be ascribed to it.
The grease pencil markings on the bottom of the glove box are described in the Decals/Stamps/Tags/Markings chapter of my '57 Chrysler 300C Handbook for restorers. |

done on the Dodges.
It quickly confirms to the Line Supervisor (if he bothered to look) that 'this' dash assembly does indeed go onto 'that' car 0431
(which was Scheduled to have been built on May 23rd).
Some scheduler had earlier planned that that glove box was to have been put into a car that was Scheduled to have been built o.o.a. 4/9/57, with a sequence number of 1506.
You can't screw up (typo-) a couple production dates by almost a month and a half ?
