Elite Veteran Posts: 990 | I have an inner rear bearing seal leaking on my '58 Plymouth. How do I remove the bearing without damaging it? I want to remove the bearing, replace the seal and re-install the bearing.

Elite Veteran Posts: 990 | Yes, it's all apart. All I need to do now is remove the axle, the bearing and the inner seal. The inner seal is what's leaking, allowing the axle oil to get onto the bearing and leak down the inside of the backing plate.

Then the cup and bearing (which may be lodged on the axle shaft). Remove the shaft and the inner seal will be attached. It's good practice to replace both seals, since the outer may have been damaged during removal. Also inspect the bearing for problems. I can't remember if the bearing needs to be packed or not. Expert Posts: 3776 Location: NorCal | There is no need to remove the bearing to change either seal. The brake backing plate acts as the bearing retainer, remove the backing plate and the axle will pull out with the bearing attached. If the axle is reluctant to come out, remove the axle shaft key and install the drum part way with the axle nut threaded on a few threads, the drum can then be used as a "slap hammer" to remove the axle. Once the axle shaft and bearing/race are out, the inner seal will be visible; remove it with a seal puller and install the new one...a piece of pipe or pvc tubing of the appropriate size makes a good seal driver. The outer seal is pressed into the backing plate, it's wise to replace it too. Edited by 57chizler 2010-03-16 5:42 PM

Elite Veteran Posts: 990 | Thank you for the photos, John. I've got the axle shaft out with the bearing attached. I want to repack the bearing. How do I get the bearing off and back on the axle shaft?

Expert Posts: 3776 Location: NorCal | Once again, there is no need to remove the bearing to pack it, just force the grease in by hand or use the needle tip of a grease gun.
