I was in Purkey's Auto Salvage on the KS /OK border on Monday.   Bunch of Forwardlook cars and most are quite complete.  Some damp ground in the yard but also hills so there is a variety of rust condition.  Prices were perhaps just a bit high but the wife of the original owner (husband deceased) and son-in-law who now manages were congenial and helpful.   Yard phones:  620-515-5201 and 620-251-5200.  I ran out of disc space on my camera.  There are many more cars.   There are almost no '57-60 Mopars.  This is a highly organized yard and when the orig. owner was very ill they had to do some crushing to get medical money and those cars sold the least parts so they are gone.   No FL converts noted.  Go for it.

I did not specifically see a '59.  There is a '58 for certain.

While I can't say I took a "replater's look" at them, I expect they would replate well.  They do remove and ship parts.  Call them.  Ask them to appraise condition and give you a quote on the parts plus shipping.

Yeah, keep in mind here that Al is about 6-7 months into managing this 60 acre yard for his mother-in-law who is old lady Purkey and this is a new business to Al.  He is trying very hard to do this right.  When I was there it was all over his face that he was studying every question to come up with the right answer both for the business and for the customer.  I thought he was very conscientious.  I think he will be a very good business man in another six months and he has one heckuva inventory to work with and I really mean that.  It is worth it to anyone to go out of their way to make a visit down the gravel road to this place.  This is not some heavily picked over junk yard like almost any other place you can name in the country.  I truly recommend it.  That was my impression anyway and of course Al could decide to go for really big bucks and the place could just sit there and rot too.  It is his place to manage.  Know what I mean?

I've been there couple times in the past - never could buy anything from the old man that died - he was a real butt hole and thats why all the stuff is still there. His wife was ok & knew where everything was but couldn't sell anything unless got the ok from him. Never met the sun-n-law so don't know anything about him. Most all the cars have set on the ground for years & the bottoms are gone. Also most things pretty rusted & pitted account of the low land they set in - it stays wet or damp except for hot summer months.

I would first like to thank "StillOutThere" for mentioning us here on this forum. I appreciate it very much. I would like to clearify a couple of things though about myself and address "56 Cruiser"s comments. The "old man" who started the Purkey's Auto Salvage 40 some years ago was my dad. I grew up working in this yard but I have been doing other things lately. I more or less took over the day to day operations of the salvage in March of this year, and I have learned a lot in that time.

The reason that these cars and this place is still here is because my dad was a car guy. He raced them, worked on them, and loved them all of his life. He refused to crush them, even when I suggested crushing a few cars and simply enjoying the money, five years ago when he first got sick. I also refused to crush more just a few this summer when frankly, it would have been very lucrative, probably more so than doing what I am doing now. I am not going crush any car that I believe to be desireable or that has desireable parts on it. No one knows more about my dad's personality than myself, but that's not why this place is here. This place is here because of his love of cars and his refusual to crush when many other yards did.

He first started the salvage across the stateline in South Coffeyville, Ok in about 1964 with a couple of cars and then moved it to its present location in 1969. Today, we have have between 4000 and 5000 cars inthe yard. Some are rusty, some were rusty when they came, but many are in very good condition considering they are 40, 50 and 60 years old. By no means are they all rusty or "pitted".

Our goal simply is to inventory the yard (this will take time), block all of the desireable cars up off the ground so they can get circulation under them, and market them at a fair price to the world. We have sold about 30 cars since March to customers in 6 states. About half of them were sold to dealers who plan to resale them. One dealer bought 4 last month and has made offers on two more. It has been an education, I promise you all. We invite each and every one of you to come and check us out. It is truely an amazing place.

We are also in the process of getting our website up and going (www.purkeysautosalvage.com), but please be patient. My wife is doing this herself. It's not real fancy, just practical. It is my goal to have at least a couple of pictures of every desireable car that we have published on the website in the future. Check it out!

Thank you, Al Purkey. Purkey's Auto Salvage.

Hi Al Purkey, and welcome to the ForwardLook. I spoke with you a couple of weeks ago. Who knows, You could well be the Oklahoma/Kansas equal to "BIG M AUTO" in Williams, CA. I'm still looking for the fender script for my '55 Dodge Royal Lancer 2 door. I'm not smart enough to be able to put a picture of what I need, but a guy in Sweden, Norway or maybe Switzerland is and he posted some pictures on a thread in the "General Technical Discussions and Trouble Shooting" The thread discusses Gold Coloring on the trim and brightwork. tuff I'm looking for is the "Royal Lancer" fender script. Mine is the narrower and script. If you have it, I'd sure be willing to come get it and to also get the driprail mouldings off that Black '55 2 door. Walt Bower

Adriana, often times the windows are missing, or the regulators frozen and it is not practical to take them apart to repair the problem.

Here, I have a problem with customers opening hoods hoping to find a hemi, and then leaving them open, along with windows and doors. ---John

Adriana, I've gone into a salvage yard and purchased a piece of glass or two out of a car.  Okay, now what is the owner of the yard supposed to do?  You know a piece of plastic over that hole won't last through the next wind storm and a piece of canvas won't last the next couple of mice.  Do you have suggestions?  I mean, seriously.

hmmm, didnt think of that.... it just brakes my heart seeing cars that could be restored sitting there with the weather getting in and ruining their interior, and the chances of them being resurrected... i wasnt having a go at this yard or anyone in particular, it was just an observation that i couldnt understand, but i see where your coming from and i see the difficulties you would face... adriana

4-5000 cars! Are you kidding me? Nothing like that left around here. Has anyone heard if Purkey's ever got a website going or made any progress? That's a whole lot of sorting and figuring out where you're going to move things around to so it works for you. Al, if I lived close to you I'd even come over and help you out.

Hey Al,
Do you have any 56-59 FL convertibles in your yard?

Al Purkey made ONE POST back in 2008 and never a second. Just a hunch: he won't answer.

I visited there and there were no '56-59 FL verts, however so you still got an answer.

It has been several years since this thread had any action. I am an hour west of Coffeyville, so pretty local. However this s the first time I have heard of this place.

Any idea if it is still around?

I expect it would be because there were several hundred cars over dozens of acres and there had been an ownership change from the old man Purkey to, as I recall, the son-in-law. But that was perhaps 5 years ago. I didn't see the area or the property as desirable at the time for a shopping mall or housing development. Make a few phone calls.......

If I were that close I would be on the road on the way there already, No asking. Grab a camera, pad of paper and a pencil, go there and check it out, then report back to us......

Will.
