Hey all, new to the forum, hopeful about to become a permanent member. Ran across a white-over-black 56 Belvedere for sale & I go look at it later today. A fender dent - scrape along a quarterpanel - some rust & bubbles down low.

I'd love to ID which engine this is, the 270 or 277? (From a few hours research, I think those are the options - the owner says 4.5L) How can I tell the difference?

And is there any chance of getting a decal close to original, for that air filter cannister?

Indeed, a 277, as indicated by the yellow (and not red) air cleaner housing. Plymouth made things VERY confusing for 1956:

"The red air cleaner came on the Dodge 270 motor at the beginning of the year, and the yellow air cleaner was used on the new 277 Plymouth motor that came out afterward. Red is Dodge's motor color - always has been; and the red air cleaner indicated to a Plymouth owner that their motor was from Dodge. The yellow air cleaner indicated Plymouth's new "A" motor was installed."

I seem to recall those air cleaner decals being reproduced, but I can't recall where. I'm sure some of the 1956 Plymouth experts can help you with that (paging Powerflite ).

Nice - thanks! As a newbie, I've been reading over a lot of info, it took quite a while to even understand '56 trim, add-on options, & models. Learning fast though.

I just ran into some info on "poly A engines", looks like possibly this block can be bored out quite a bit bigger, all the way up to 326? Decades back I briefly owned a '61 wagon with a 318, and I liked that engine a lot. If I pick up this car - and I sure love the way it looks - I'll have to decide if keeping it stock is enough power, or if I'd rather swap or build out. Looks like some here in the forum have swapped in later 318 / 3-speed 3-spd auto drive trains.

...most likely keep it stock (excepting alternator & likely distributor, methinks) & doll up that engine compartment. Powerflite might have insight into decals - I could even paint a replica I spose!

There is a guy on Ebay that sells the decals, but for some reason no longer sells the red ones. He still sells the white ones though. I asked him if he would be willing to sell the red again, and he declined. Worst case, you could purchase a set of white ones, scan them in, and take that as a pattern to have the red ones made for you.

A newer 318 electronic distributor will drop right in. Couple that with my HEI conversion, and you are set to go without having to mount a box to your firewall. http://www.designed2drive.com
I don't recommend boring your block out too far. But you can install a 4" stroker crank into it to get more cubes. If you do, you will have to use a later 727 push button trans as the newer crank isn't compatible with the older transmission.

NICE - great advice on the decal, the distributor, the option for the 4" stroke crank / 727 tranny. And you've sold me on your bracket & info, on that distributor. It'll be a while before I start the serious work... And I'm way ahead of myself, as I still haven't bought the car yet... But thanks, that's all terrific info! I can tell already there's a wealth of good people & great knowledge on the forum.

Quick shot at turning the white Hy Fire decal red using the white eBay decal as a base (needs more time and patience than I gave it):

Well that was disappointing....too many big hail dents, too much rust, front end needs way to much work. However this convinced me the 56 Belvedere is a terrific model - I just need to find an acceptable car! I hope to be back.

THANKS for the decals - thanks everyone for the friendly reception!
