Location: Freeport, PA | Hey guys...I have just finished installing a 383 B block into my '58 Belvedere. I know that with the original starter motor from the 318 Poly, there is a remote solenoid. The starter for the B block is the newer type with the solenoid built in. Can I bypass the old remote setup and just wire up to the newer starter, or is it not that simple?

You could wire the starter direct but you'd lose the function of the Neutral Safety Switch if the car has an automatic trans. The main reason for using an external solenoid/relay is so the NSS can supply a ground for the solenoid only when the shifter is in Neutral. |

Location: Freeport, PA | What would you guys recommend as the easiest way to use the newer starter and retain a neutral safety switch, as it is a newer aluminum 727 trans? Can I just use the existing remote solenoid and wire the starter up the way the poly one was, or will that not work. Auto electric is not my thing... |

If you want to use the newer gear-reduction starter with the existing solenoid and NSS simply run a 16-gauge jumper wire from the main battery stud on the starter to the smaller "S" terminal next to it. |
