Posts: 19146 Location: bishop, ca | I just checked emblemagic.com and was shocked, shocked to see that they do not show the 1961 Dodge plastic grille emblem in their inventory. They can restore an existing one, or, better yet, could use a good one in order to create their own reproduction of that emblem. Virtually every 61 Polara probably needs a NOS-looking plastic grille emblem. Its pot metal backing-piece can be re-chromed and/or re-anodized, but the plastic front-section is either in great condition, or it's not!

Member Posts: 15 Location: Germany | Last Weekend was the first meeting for the Coupe. Many years this car was not at shows. I think this was the first meeting after 16 years. look here for all pictures: https://picasaweb.google.com/mrpolara/Kaunitz2011# Of course many pictures from the 61er Polara Coupe but many other interesting cars are to see. 4x 58er Buick LTD, 2x 60er Plymouth Fury, 57er Plymouth Coupe, 61er Desoto, many Cadillacs, Rods and old cars. This meeting ist a 50s car meeting in germany. There are not so many cars on this meeting, but there are good cars. And most very high quality. enjoy.....

You two guys must have to get the Polara grille ornaments be made up, from Emblemagic or in Sweden/Finland, or from somewhere!

Veteran Posts: 158 Location: Ottawa, ON | Some very nice cars here! Hey, I would like to use this thread to introduce myself to this forum. I've read a lot in the past few month but never written anything so now i think it's time to say hello. My name is Nikolas, i'm a Phd Student in biochemistry and ever since i was allowed to drive something with an engine it had to be something sepcial and most times it had to be older than me. Now my newest ride is not really new to this forum. I bought Merten's black 61 Polara last year, the one which is mentioned earlier in this thread. Now I'm using this winter (and all my money) to make some kind of restoration on this car. Unfortunately there is some rust, especially on the rear quarters, the trunk and the floor pans but sheet metal has already arrived and will be welded in soon. I've already done the engine (e.g. cleaned erverything, new gaskets, new paint). After all the metal work is done I'll focus on the all the fancy gadgets and I'll tr to bring everything back to work as was supposed back in 1961. From the technical point of view there are not really any questions from my side but there are some mysteries around this car that maybe some of you can help me to solve. First of all, I was told my Dodge was an ex-sheriff car. The facts that speak for this hypothesis are: the D-500 383 4bbl, the black paint, somewhat "bigger as usual" brakes (I haven't took a closer look on them yet), spotlights on both fenders an a let's say really professional closed hole (piece of sheet metal glued to the roof with bondo) in the roof. On the other side there are a few points that do not look like a former official/police usage of this car: Full chrome trim, a dash mounted rear view mirror, a radio, the polara medaillon in the grille and noe sure grip diff. So what do you think? And the next question is about the engine (which is in really good shape by the way): it is a 383 b-block with a 4 bbl Carter AFB, but there is no I.D. stamp on the block. is it possible that the block was milled an the stamp was removed during this process? Also the casting number is somehow strange, as i could only find two forum entries (one from this forum) stating that these blocks where built for the Facel Vega and possibly the Jensen Interceptor. the Casting number is : 1851829-5 L.L. what do you guys say, is this the original engine? Thanks for any replies! Here a a few pics I took just after a got the Car: (front.jpg) (back.jpg) (dash.jpg) (engine.jpg) Attachments ---------------- front.jpg (389KB - 265 downloads) back.jpg (313KB - 239 downloads) dash.jpg (327KB - 231 downloads) engine.jpg (317KB - 258 downloads)

Where are you taking your doctoral research, and how long before we have to start calling you Herr Doktor???? Nice car!! As you may know, the engine stamping number appears on that small 'flat' area, at the base of the distributor. Let's see what that flat area looks like, bitte. ...Dorsey ("Oldwood") is right; you should start your own car's discussion on this "Member's Rides" message board! Veteran Posts: 158 Location: Ottawa, ON | I hope i'm allowed change my nickname to Dr.Polara61 in early 2015. :-) I'm working on lung cancer therapies at the hannover medical school. Now to the stamping area: just smooth metal... and i've already openend a new topic with my questions in the general technical discussion thread and i don't want to flood this board with like 5000 threads on my first day here ;-)

Posts: 19146 Location: bishop, ca | The only downside to changing your name, here, is losing your number of credited post-counts. You know that, in 66-ish, Oldsmobuick had a "Dr. Oldsmobile" (or sumsuch) to advertise their performance car models. Not trying to 'stroke' your motor, but, what is your research dissertation 'on'? A PhD is a big deal, over here, involving years of research, after a Masters degree is awarded. You plan to teach at University? You can create your own Members Rides thread, on your car. Veteran Posts: 158 Location: Ottawa, ON | yes, i know the ads featurig dr.oldsmobile. and i was just joking when i said i would change my nickname, in germany it is common that in the field of natural science nobody really mentions their degree. usually you would call your professor just mr xyz not prof.dr.dr.dr. xyz e.g. my diss is on the development of genetically modified viruses targeting lung cancer cells. i don't want to go to much in to detail because this topic is kinda "hot" and we're alos planning to get a patent on this. usually a phd in germany takes 3-4 years and you also have to get a bachelor degree and a master degree (this is new for the whole EU). a few years go you had to have a "diplom" to make your "dr.". and no, i'm not really planning to teach but to focus on the research and maybe later on get a job at a cool company and make tons of money ;-) ok, i got it, i'll make my own thread asap :-)

Veteran Posts: 158 Location: Ottawa, ON | most pobably it'll be named something like EU-ABC2723839 and you are right, it's the same here but especially for patents and publications there is always a small part like 10-20% that is credited to the phd student.
