I was at my local Autozone a few days ago, and inquired whether or not they could order a transmission pan gasket. While technically for my 1957 Firedome, I was asked if it was for a 1957 Adventurer (which popped up on their computer) I said yes. (Both have the A466 cast iron torqueflite, air-cooled 3-sp transmission.) The salespeople were proud that it would be easy to get one, a Felpro to boot, and I was asked if I wanted cork or rubber. I chose rubber. Today (3 days later) I was called that it had arrived, and when I saw it, the label said "powerflite transmission" on it. I explained that it was the wrong gasket, but was told that it definitely wasn't wrong, because that's the part number referenced by the computer. It was also the only gasket/part number listed for 1957 Adventurer.

It happened to be that while I had things apart, I repainted the pan, and actually had it with me, outside in my daily driver. I retrieved it, and showed it and compared it to the gasket I was told would fit. It obviously would NOT fit. I tried to explain that no 1957 Adventurer came with a powerflite transmission, but was met with puzzled looks because what I said was contrary to what the computer said. I suggested that a correction be made so that no one else, anywhere else, ordering such a thing, would be given the wrong part, and I was told they can't do that.

I convinced them to order one for me as listed for a 1957 Chrysler 300. They looked at the image for that on their computer, counted the bolt holes and compared it to my actual pan, and finally agreed I knew what I was talking about. Hopefully I will get the right thing this time. BTW, it is only something like $7... The last time I replaced one, I went to an online gasket guy who supplies them for antique cars, but for the $7 price there's no reason to buy from a specialist. That's assuming it's Felpro like the incorrect one, and not FingFangFu.

There's a lot of errors in the books, and not just for forwardlook cars. Brakes on an A-body were especially confused back when I was buying them. The truth is that they don't care that much about them because the sales volume is lower than what they want.

There's a lot of errors in the computers because, even when the books were correct, the people who transcribed the data from the books made erroneous assumptions about interchangeability.

When going to my LAS, I always try to have the numbers that I have researched.

What is the part number you ended up with for the 466?

I'll get that number when I get back to my garage. I just installed the pan gasket a couple of hours ago, and didn't see your message until now. I kept the label. Cost was $6.99 plus tax, Fellpro, and a perfect fit.

Here's the pic, too, of the package I bought. Apparently Advance Auto has them even cheaper!
