Sixty years ago today Bud Faubel ran his Chrysler 300-G 156.657 mph through the Measured Mile on Daytona Beach. His Flying Mile two-way average of 145.926 mph would have broken the record set by Gregg Ziegler in a 300-F in 1960, but he was disqualified because the windshield header molding came off during the run. Faubel did set the record of 90.7 mph for the Standing Mile Acceleration in the 300-G.

I’m compiling the history of Faubel’s 300-G. It started at the factory as a regular Alaskan White 300-G scheduled to be built on October 26, 1960. Like the 300-F Gran Turismos the year before, it was pulled off the line and brought to the Engineering Garage for similar modifications. Four Daytona-bound 300-Gs received the same 400-hp short ram 413 setup as the 1960 beach racers, but with Chrysler’s new-for-1961 A745 three-speed manual transmission. Some sources mix up the history of Faubel’s 300-G with his 1962 Chrysler 300, known as “Big Red.”

Here’s a photo of Faubel and Ziegler with Faubel’s 300-G at Daytona Beach in 1961. Maybe because it was the last year of beach racing, there is not a lot of information out there about the event. It was covered in Motor Trend, Motor Life and of course the Daytona Beach Morning Journal. I have the 1961 Speed Weeks souvenir program, NASCAR news bulletin with results, and the rules pamphlet for the Beach Trials. Faubel’s G was also featured on a flyer for Paxton Products. If anyone has or knows of any more photos, films or other information on the 1961 Daytona Flying Mile or Standing Mile events, events please let me know.

Today in 2022 was the 64th annual Daytona 500. This day is also the anniversary of Bud Faubel’s 300-G running an average of 90.661 mph in the standing start mile acceleration at Daytona Beach for the top speed in 1961. The previous year Brewster Shaw had the highest average speed in Class 7 in a 400hp/4-speed 300-F at 88.235 mph. Also in this 1961 event Ken Fisher averaged 90.338, and Brewster Shaw averaged 89.179 with 300-Gs.

Tom McCahill wrote in his 1957 Chrysler 300-C review “the Standing Start Mile reveals a great deal more of any car’s potential than the Flying Mile. In a Standing Start Mile, to be successful and a winner over all makes a car must possess a number of factors including almost record-breaking acceleration right from a standstill and a bag full of top speed after the first half mile.”

Standing start MPH seems slow to me. I turned 1/4 mile times faster than that speed with a stock 383 '63 Plymouth. Granted it was drag racing on a sanctioned strip but I would think in a mile distance the top speed at the end would be faster than 90 MPH. What am I missing?

I realize that but it still seems slow when they can hit over 156 mph on the flying mile. Just my thoughts.

It’s the Average speed over the mile, not the top speed at the end

That makes more sense. I mistakenly thought it was top speed at the end.
