Subject: How do front fenders mount?

Hello all, new guy here.

My father has asked me to put his 56 Chrysler 300 front clip on so he can sell the car.

Does anyone have diagrams or photos of how the fenders attach to the vehicle? I've got them hanging there and everything is WAY off.

This does not go together like a 60's unibody!

Thank you!

Mark: I am not the best person to answer your question(s) but I will start and hopefully others (Powerflite (Nathan), Wizard (Sven), 22mafeja (Ralf), etc) will chime in with better answers.

What I "know" is based on work on my 56 Dodge and access to a few images from the Parts book and the 56 Mopar Collision Damage manual. I hope they help.

What I think I know is the fenders attach to the body via an upper bracket on the firewall (see photo below of Nathan's (Powerflite's) white 56 Plymouth which shows the upper fender attachment bracket and the hinge bracket, both part of the firewall structure.

The bottom of the fenders have a tab that is bolted into the lower rocker/firewall via a captured nut.

There are also inner fenders (splash shields) to which the outer fenders are bolted.

At the front, there is the radiator yoke (and maybe brackets) at the top and stone deflector at the bottom. All these bolt together like some kind of jig-saw puzzle.

You don't say where you are located. If you did, there might be somebody from this forum who lives locally to you and who could help you figure it all out.

Good luck.

Some images that might help you (note: 56 Desotos are basically the same as 56 Chryslers):

Found this in the 56 Chrysler Factory Service manual pdf available at

https://mymopar.com/service-manuals/

And I took another photo of my 56 Dodge showing an additional fender attachment bolt by the rear of the cowl. I am not sure whether the 56 Chryslers and Desotos had the same
type of attachment points.

....and you will probably need some slotted shims and fender washers to get the fenders aligned. I have quite a few that you could have for shipping cost, but buying them locally is probably cheaper than shipping prices these days.

On the 1955 Plymouth assembly line, the fender and the splash shield/liner arrived on the line as one unit.

Thank you so much, guys. Diagrams are very helpful. I have the inner and outer fenders together, plus the cowl bolt connected. All of that was fairly obvious. But the "brace" and "bracket" as shown are MIA. I'll have to search for those. It helps greatly to know what I'm looking for.

It seems like the cowl is sitting too low. It already has a lot of spacers under it, so... I'll see what I can figure out.

Cool video! Probably just a few current-day OSHA violations there!

Justin L. (polyJ here) has a great write-up on his website regarding the conversion of his front frame (not fender) clip from OE 56 Dodge to Dodge Dakota truck (with power rack and pinion
steering). I emailed Justin to ask him if he had any front fender clip removal photos and/or hints. This is his reply:

"Sorry. I don't have photos that would help pinpoint all the fasteners, but there is a bolt/nut at the top and bottom of each fender connecting it to the cowl. There are two nuts in the center bottom of the radiator support that hold the clip to the chassis. With the front wheels removed and the electrical and any hoses disconnected and these 6 bolts/nuts are removed, you can lift the entire clip up and forward with the inner fenders intact. The hood hinges do not need to be removed."

Dave here again: I checked my 56 Dodge again the other day and there are three bolts per fender attaching the fender to the cowl, 2 on the top side and one at the bottom. Then there are the fender liner/spash shield bolts that connect them to the fenders.

As per Justin's suggestion, I think the fender liners are attached to the rad support and the rad support is attached to front cross frame cross member.

I just confirmed that for a 56 Dodge, the fender liners are attached to the rad support (or the other way around) with two bolts from the inside of the wheel well through captured nuts on the fender liners. At least two bolts per side (maybe 4). I am unable to see the rad support where it must attach to the front frame cross-member.

Found some great photos of a 56 Fury that is for sale. Included with the body and interior photos, there were chassis photos including these two showing how the rad support bolts to the frame at an "ear" on the front suspension cross member.

More treasures from the 56 Fury auction photos. This time the bolts at the bottom of the fenders where they are bolted to the rocker structure.

FWIW, when mounting fenders on my '56 Belvedere, I found that the right and left brackets were different. The only bracket on my Fury parts car was different from either of the Belvedere parts, and the other side was missing, so instead of trying to determine the proper configuration and then locate parts, I made brackets to fit.

I don't know if the odd ball parts were supposed to be different designs and were more likely a result of body damage repair.

Another little suggestion: Leave those two bolts that attach the radiator support to the frame loose enough to shift. It will save a lot of cuss words when aligning the hood and all the fender parts.

Gary:

As far as I know, bottom of the front fender, at the firewall, attaches to the rocker panel via a 1/4 x 20 bolt (and washer) into a captured nut in the rocker.

Like this:

REFERENCE: http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=76246&...

To solve my problem (Fubar'd captured nut) back then, I used a 1/4 x 20 "Jack Nut"/Hanson Rivet
