I am on other vBulletin forums and most have a "new threads" section that stay around for awhile. One forum that I am on daily keeps a list of 40 new threads based on postings in the various sub-forums. If they don't get any replies they eventually drop off the bottom. I think it works better. (I have been on that forum since Feb 2006 and have 11,314 posts there).

I find it annoying that an interesting "new thread" here just disappears after a few hours (minutes? I can't figure out what the rationale is)

Case in point. This thread disappeared in a matter of a few hours.

I'll keep it alive until a moderator provides some input.

I thought that it shows new threads that have been updated since the last time you logged in.
Perhaps a recent or active threads tab would keep current ones up for longer?

Yes, The threads watch what you see and don't repeat after a couple hours after you had a chance to look at all of them. When you come back in a couple hours or so, all the new and updated threads will be there, so you don't have to muddle through ones you have already read.

If you want to see more threads, you can do a search for all active threads in the past 24 hours. That function is independent of your last login.

or you can post a one-liner and that way you can pull up all threads that you are "active" in by just clicking the 'Your active threads' link at the top-RIGHT side of the page...
the 'Posts active today' and the 'View unanswered posts' links, also top-RIGHT, also come in handy...

That is also my preferred way to use this forum.

For current day's threads

For current day + previous day

My main concern is that as a noobie, I am posting a lot of questions. I am not sure that I am not getting answers because people don't have answers or because the question disappeared from the New Threads listing before they even saw it. (I know that my question is still in the particular sub-forum I've asked it in, but that requires people to actively look through the forum listings rather than just be presented with the question in the New Threads listing).

they will see it in their new thread listing...
their new thread list is completely independent of your new thread list...

if after a few days or so, if your threads don't get an answer, just add a one-liner "bump" post and it will again show up in everybody's new thread list...

Okay I did NOT know that. I thought that the new thread list was just that, a forum New Thread list, not one customized to my account number. But that raises questions too. Lots of "New Threads" on my list disappear even though I never even looked at the them.

I have and WILL use the "bump" feature to raise my question thread back to the New Thread list, as needed, until I get the answer I need.

they show up as new because they were posted or edited since your last login...
them disappearing from new is based on how many minutes/hours since your last login, has nothing to do with if you read them or if you clicked on them...
it's all based on last login and is customized to each account as that account logs in...

you may also want to try a search on the topic you need help on. these threads go way back - it is possible that the question has been asked and answered before...

i've never had much luck with the "search" feature - i have more, MUCH MORE, luck telling GOOGLE to search this site (you can tell Google what URL to search) than i have ever had having this site search this site...
doesn't hurt to also keep a list of other members that have the same car as you...

I think the system re sets around midnight (US) as all the posts go away about lunch time here in Perth, but they stay up in their relative subjects until
someone else post a new thread or an old one gets bumped up, then its bumped down 1 spot

A lot of "No Response" questions are because the guy that knows isn't online to see it, or its actually pretty simple and everyone thinks someone else will answer.

I had that on another forum with my buick, the workshop manual doesn't actually give a procedure to remove the engine, so I asked and got crickets, so I then asked
why no one responded and why it wasn't in the manual and was told "its a simple job and didn't need to be answered" I kind of blew up at that response.

As it turned out, it was far from simple to do (took 2 days to get it out) it was easier pulling the engine from the dodge, including first taking the front clip off (as per workshop manual direction)
