I have a 1960 dodge dart, and have been looking for a replacement reverse lens. I've seen some cars with backup delete covers. Was this a factory option? Did some cars just not have reverse lights? If anyone could provide me with some info I'd appreciate it (Example attached).

I know that in 1956 Reverse lights were an option (or an accessory after the fact) at least on Coronet. Probably included on the Custom Royal.

There was reverse light blank/delete panel available for those cars that did not get the reverse light.

Based on this eBay 61 Dodge Reverse light kit, I presume that they were optional on lower-priced cars in 1960:

Interesting, thanks for the information. I wonder when they became mandatory.

Reverse or back up lights were an option on most cars up until the mid sixties.

I can only assume that different states had different requirements regarding backup lights.
Not unlike the single to dual headlight configuration that transpired in 1957.

Four of my last six cars had no lights.

The first reverse lamp came out in the 1920's, and was standardized in 1947 for the '48 model year, meaning that the color, brightness, direction & purpose were defined. But they didn't become mandatory until the 1966 models.

My 58 Belvedere has a reverse light delete panel. Its a fancy stainless piece, the way the factory designed it makes it look like a regular reverse light until you look at it up close. Sorry but I don't have a up close photo of it. I'm unsure how many other 58 Plymouths still wear the reverse light delete.

Are these showing lights or delete panels?

It looks like the lower one (red one) has the delete panel, as it looks like there are dings in it. Pretty hard to tell unless you see it in person or a good close up photo; I actually thought my car, before I saw it in person, had a reverse light. Kinda shocked to see it didn't, but its ok as I think it makes it unique.
