I am working on improving my 56 Dodge ashtray. The center bit needs repainting. I can't find the needed paint colour (yet) so I had a "BRAIN WAVE" late last night:

"If I can remove the lettering on one of the spare/dead gauges that I have, leaving the anodized aluminum untouched, I can remove and repurpose the gauge face on the ash tray."

So this morning, I got a Q-tip and dipped it in some chemical paint stripper and applied it to the tiny numbers at the top of my dead coolant temp gauge (long since removed and replaced). Nothing seemed to happen to the numbers so I applied a bit more stripper.

BANG. The green "anodizing" started to wrinkle. A third touch with the Q-tip and some of the "anodizing" came off.

The 56 Dodge gauges were never anodized. They were painted.

Too bad somebody doesn't list the paint code.

Oh well, back to Plan A: Remove the ashtray face and paint the green bit with a Duplicolor paint that is close to the gauge paint colour.

The pros will remove the face from the gauge and paint the entire face; then use a decal to get the info back onto them. Professional 2-part paint has that same sheen finish if you don't spray the clear coat over it. You can get a paint shop to mix it up for you in a spray can to make it easier.

Nathan: I am actually working on my 56 Dodge ashtray and was hoping that I would be able to use the green metal bit from the temp gauge (which I thought was anodized, not painted) under the ashtray knob.

I've removed the knob (factory rivet) from the ashtray and will be stripping it and then painting - once I find a paint that works.

I've tried to find a paint that matches but came up dry. I found a Honda paint that is too dark and another Honda paint that is too light. I removed the original paint from the ashtray face and, after masking off the area that needs to stay chrome (the whole thing has been chromed), I sprayed a light coat of primer. When it was dry a laid on a good coat of the darker Honda paint and while it was still wet, I tried a misting coat of the lighter Honda paint over the darker paint. I might have been happy with the result, but when I removed the masking tape, the tape took some of the paint off at the interface between paint and chrome. Not happy.

So I will strip off the new paint and primer and go again. This time, I will use a FROG tape to get a better edge and, after priming the surface, I will try it with just the darker Honda paint.

This is the current result, Trial 1:
