Member Posts: 6 | Hello all. I am new to this board, but not the Saratoga! My Grandmother bought this car and it has been in the family ever since. She is beautiful, and I am trying to keep her running! We are having trouble with the Gearshift Control Unit. The Neutral button seems to collapse inside the gearshift box. I have seen it repaired, but this is happening more and more often. Does anyone have a similar experience with this? A recommendation/ solution? All input is greatly appreciated!

Member Posts: 6 | Mine is a five button, arranged like that last pic. When the button collapses into the housing, I have only fixed it by going in and re-aligning the clips. I will try to send a picture....

Three speed: Rusty but you get the picture: Basic box is roughly the same for all of them 'cept the amount of button arms/levers. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1957-PLYMOUTH-PUSH-BUTTON-TRANSMISSION-CONT... Expert 5K+ Posts: 9855 Location: Lower Mainland BC | Judith - 2017-07-29 9:36 PM try again Judith: You did get the upload to work. Just one problem you did the upload in the wrong thread. I've brought your photo from that thread over here to your thread: Not knowing that much, I would suspect that either the Neutral pushbutton rod has broken or the return spring has broken. Springs will be easier. Either way, it will have to be removed and investigated and fixed. Good luck. Edited by 56D500boy 2017-07-29 9:42 PM

Member Posts: 6 | Thanks for the input. We have repaired it on the fly when out and about, but I think someone that knows what they are doing will have to look deeper into it to do a real repair! We'll see how it goes. This is a great site. So glad I found it!

Member Posts: 31 Location: South Australia | Hi Judith, I don't have much to offer but I have had similar issues with my New Yorker push button pod. It isn't difficult to extract from the dash and I didn't find it that hard to pull down to replace a few springs - putting it back together spring-loaded was a bit more of a challenge but some patience is handy at that point! From memory there was a pin running through the latch that has a squashed end on it that I had to file down to enable extraction, which thereby released all the springy goodness within. I took plenty of photos to help me reassemble it. Getting the shift cable back on was fiddly. It works fairly well now. I'm no mechanic and it didn't present too much of a difficulty to have a go at but if you are uncomfortable, by all means seek help. For the record, mine had a busted tang that engages the start switch. Good Luck!

Judith: I agree with 57chizler that the button rod might be broken. This is what they look like: Photo is from Serge (sermey) in Switzerland

Extreme Veteran Posts: 360 | if is just worn down you can find replacements on ebay every now and then. You could also build the plastic back up with fiberglass resin or some other sort of 2 part epoxy. Main thing with this approach is making sure it sticks to the old plastic.

Elite Veteran Posts: 769 Location: Oley, PA | I have had a similar problem, but mine was due to the metal "fork" tines being bent apart so that the plastic pushes too far into it. Simple solution was to disassemble and re-bend the fork to the right shape.
