Smacks of back when a number of Aussie states effectively banned registration of left hand drive vehicles in a number of states. I'll never forget seeing the third-world steer/brake conversions with bicycle chains and rods running across the firewall to m/cyinders etc which were still on the left.....gee that must be so muh safer than a fctory LHD car.

Who puts these fools in charge....meanwhile the building industry is still full of asbestos......

The world is going crazy, and Australia is at the forefront, and I guess little old NZ will follow like the sheep we are.....

LOL I remember seeing chain driven steering!

It is absolutely stupid and just more over reacting crap or more money for the companies involved. Maybe clean up our corrupt construction business. Oh no wait, they contribute to local and federal govt.. Although they are for random checks.
A mate had to remove his exhaust gaskets before it was released in Aust.

Guess I won't be importing anymore cars..

Yet another example of filtering mosquitoes and swallowing camels.

Sadly, it's "we" that elect those bureaucrats and paragraph jockeys......

Meanwhile, asbestos is "allowed" in ships and buildings, because it would be a devastating cost to remove it.

This has the potential to stop people like myself bringing personal cars to Australia. What a shame. I would have liked to bring another American ride to Au.

I found two more WWW info pages giving the alert.

Absolutely ridiculous. Another issue of bureaucrats gone wild! Time for the people to take them down a couple of notches. Can anyone explain this part?

"If the asbestos-related import/export restrictions were not enough, the Australian government is also ramping efforts to keep what are described as “culturally significant automobiles” in Australia and is considering the seizure of any vehicle deemed to have been “illegally” exported since 1987. Based on the UNESCO convention in trafficking of illicit cultural property, the proposed legislation would include any vehicle designed by an Australian, built in Australia, altered in Australia, or strongly associated with an Australian. To quote from the proposed legislation, “the best way of promoting the regime would be a couple of high profile actions for the seizure and return of forfeit cultural material”. If you have a car with a significant Australia history, be nervous."

How can they possibly go after anyone who legally sold and exported an Australian car since 1987! Sounds like blatant theft to me. And what is really the point of it? Did you Australians elect a mob family in your government or something? Should the US forcefully take back all the US cars that entered Australia since 1987 too? Sounds like a good trade to me. If your government really goes through with this, that is what I would be proposing.

What it basically says is if you didn't get the correct import papers from the Aust Dept of Infrastructure and somehow the car gets off the docks then it's an illegal import.. There is also a different rule/import approval for cars built 1988 and onwards..

To Import
We have to buy the car
Show the Dept of Infrastructure the bill of sale, then apply for the import approval
If yes then the wheels get in motion.. Some people don't get the approval papers and customs can be paid to turn a blind eye..... It's a big risk not going through the right channels. They will either send it back or crush it or pay a massive fine.

Not sure how other countries do it but import approval here is the major part of bringing the car over... The asbestos is over the top.

By and large the asbestos problem relates to brakes and clutches...

So you need to replace these with components sold in the US after 1994, when it became illegal to sell asbestos-containing components in the US as it had been in Australia for a number of years previously.

You then provide proof (receipts, photos, declarations) along with your import application and there are no problems.

I agree that it's a joke for them to go after these things when there are literally thousands of acres of domestic, industrial and commercial buildings in Australia with unprotected asbestos-reinforced cement corrugated sheeting on their roofs. There is even a water storage dam in Western Australia which had an AC (asbestos cement) roof built over it to reduce evaporation.

This is probably the worst form of asbestos exposure. In weather over the years, the fibres are exposed and blow in the wind, which means they can be breathed in. You can eat asbestos and consume it in a drink, but breathe it into your lungs and it can be dangerous.

The reason the government is hot to trot on the issue is that they got sprung when it was realised that thousands of Great Wall utes have been sold with asbestos in their head gaskets. Replacing those head gaskets has been an expensive and difficult task for the importers, but mostly it means that the customs people didn't do their job so now they're showing just how 'efficient' they are.

As for the export of significant cars, I really don't know what this is aimed at. But for a start, the majority of the cars which won the Australian Grand Prix between 1955 and 1979 would have been exported. And lots of their major opposition. There are a few car collectors in Australia who have gathered a bunch of such cars and retain them in Australia, but not all of them are young men and the prospect of more cars being exported is high when those collections get broken up.

The best thing to do if you're looking at importing a car is talk to your importing agent/s and find out the experiences they've had and what they recommend you do.

PS and when is served in the army our tanks were parked under asbestos shelters, after a week or so you could see asbestos fibers and dust on them. i believe those shelters are still in use.
