Regular Posts: 56 | Hi. I am having my golden commando engine rebuilt. Does anyone know an affordable place to buy a rebuild kit. Also, any suggestions for a new cam and where to buy. I am not racing the car just looking for performance and drivability improvements. A little thump would be nice. Automatic car.

Extreme Veteran Posts: 406 Location: Hilltown, PA | I'm gonna jump in here with a suggestion and see what kind of feedback it gets - I'm curious myself. I will eventually be doing a 1964 383 for my Desoto (with automatic trans), and would also like a little "lump" in my cam choice. I'm thinking of using what used to be called the "Purple Shaft" or "Hemi grind" cam - assuming I can still find it. I had this cam in a 340 small block years ago and loved it in that motor, but that was a manual trans car (and it was also under a 6-Pack intake). What does everyone else think? Gregg

Maybe - I have the 383/trans in a parts car. I'm torn between the '64 Torqueflite and a newer OD trans. I know the 361/iron case 'flite are incompatible with anything but each other. I'm also aware of the effect of displacement on cam profile/behavior, which is part of why I'm curious about this thread. In the 340 the Purple Shaft was pretty lumpy, but worked well with the manual trans. I'm wondering how that cam would sound in a 383, and if the automatic will tolerate it. Or if I actually need to go bigger in the 383 . . . ? Isn't the 440 H/P cam the same, or very nearly the same as the Purple Shaft/Hemi grind cam? Or am I mis-remembering . . . Elite Veteran Posts: 888 Location: Peoples Republic of Oregon | In the old days, the 'smallest' Purple Shaft was 284 x 484. The 68-69 440 HP cam was a split pattern 268/284 x 450. The 340 was also a split pattern at 268/276 x 444. I don't have the exact numbers for a 361 but a similar year 383-2-bbl was 256/260 x 435

Member Posts: 16 | Not sure if this is what you're referring to but... P4452783 is the purple shaft cam that had the profile of the original HP 440's and 383's (Magnum, Commando, etc.). As I understand it is no longer made.

Expert Posts: 1476 Location: Pacific Northwest | Way to hijack someones thread there guys. ;-) Lebaron, Are you going to be doing the engine yourself? If not your machine shop will do some inspecting and detecting to determine the condition of your engine. you may just need the basics like rings, guides, bearings and seals. Install the grind of your choice and away you go. I'm not sure how deep your pockets are but most of the parts you will need can be bought through Summit, Mancini or the supplier of your choice. Of course be sure to get B block not RB block across to the vendor. I did a quick search and found this for you. http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=46331 Edited by ABloch 2017-11-17 11:48 AM

Regular Posts: 56 | Thanks for the suggestions. Pockets are empty and i am waiting to hear what i need from machinist. All i know is crank needs a touch up. I have never built an engine before. But thought after all these years a better all around camshaft would be available. Probably had the equivalent of the purple cam.

Extreme Veteran Posts: 371 | Bumping up the cam is something to consider. The new cam gonna need the springs for it and the installed hieght might add to machine shop fees. Talk to your machine shop about what you want also maybe call Summit tech support to get their ideas. I built a 360 for my '79 truck and used a mild cam 268/272, matching springs, dodge J-heads with back cut valve face, bored only .020 and stock cast iron jugs degreed 4 degrees btdc. This was purpose built for hauling so it would develop good low end torque at a lower rpm and the cam would come alive around 2,000-2,500 rpm rather than 3,000-3,500rpm. When you think about the purple cam shafts those are for hot rodders that don't care about fuel mileage, I know I don't in one. But talk to the machine shop if they are good they will know what to do. I know a shop I wouldn't take a lawn mower engine to and yet they claim they are the best around here. They can say that because they are the only machine shop in a 40 mile radius.
