According to my canadian chrysler corp chart for 1956, 29 is code for Shell pink. I cannot find 10, but it might be black. Maybe bill Watson will chime in here with the answer..

Thanks! Keep the info coming guys, and the car is a very dark grey/graphite over pink. The interior is all light grey, and I am wondering if that is original. Would the trim code tell me about the interior color?

Yes, it should; can you post up a pic of your car's data tag?

As requested; also here is a photo of the rear of the car showing the color combo; not the greatest picture but the only one I have on my phone.

Yes, 10 is black. So, 2910 is Shell Pink over Black, which this one is. This Regent sedan appears to have the optional Sportone which was standard on Mayfair and Regent hardtops and optional on sedans and wagons. It has the correct chrome tail lamp housings and the painted back up lamp housings.

1956 was a great year for Chrysler in Canada, even better than 1955, with Plymouth and Dodge producing over 40,000 cars each. Dodge also built 7,000 Custom Royal models. Sales actually fell in 1957 and again in 1958. A brief break came in 1959 and 1960, followed by falling sales again in 1961 and 1962. Both Plymouth and Dodge hit bottom in 1962 with a little over 10,000 cars built for each. Both were below Chrysler and less than half Valiant. After 1962 sales turned upward.

A total of 17,024 1956 Dodge Regent 6 cylinder cars (D60-2) were built. Have no breakdown of production by body style - 2 and 4 sedans, 2 door hardtop and 2 and 4 door Custom Suburban wagons. This one was the 6,901st D60-2 4-door sedan built.

Regent interiors came in two tone cloth and vinyl in four colour combinations - blue, green, grey and black cloth /pink vinyl. The cloth was darker than the vinyl and had a ladder stripe fabric with silver metallic threads.

"JCA" - J was 1956 and C was grey.

Engine was a 250.6-cid 25" block flathead six. 1956 was the first year for 12-volt electrics in Plymouths and Chrysler-built Dodges. It also has Chrysler's push button 2-speed Powerflite.

That body tag was used on all Canadian-built Plymouths, Dodges, DeSotos and Chryslers (except Airflow models) from sometime in 1935 through to the end of the 1965 model year. The 1965 tag was a little smaller with a smaller font.

Bill;
Thanks for all of the excellent information. I figured this car must be a fairly rare beast and am excited about bringing her back to its original glory, and by the sounds of it that is true.
One question for clarification; what is the optional Sportone that you refer to?

Here is a picture of the rear seat; it has a very old seat cover on the seat bottom because it is threadbare, but the seat back I'm guessing is original.
Can any of you gurus out there confirm that this seat back is as original to the car? If so that makes it easy to use as a template to have new ones made as close to original as possible. Hopefully that fabric is available; I'm sure the grey vinyl will be easy to find.

Seatback is OEM; send a good close-up image to SMS; you may need the vinyl and seat beading, too.

Confirm the availability from SMS, and then have your auto upholstery shop confirm the amount of yardage that you will need
for your project.

SMS has been known to over-sell their yardages.

The Sportone was a side trim/paint treatment Chrysler offered back in the Forwardlook era. Attached are two photos. One is of a US-built Plymouth Savoy 2dr sedan. The side trim along the front fender into the door is the standard trim for a Savoy or Regent, except the Canadian Savoy and Regent 2 door hardtop. The lower trim with the white insert is the Sportone trim available on American 1956 Plymouth Plaza and Savoy models and Canadian Plaza and Dodge Crusader models.

The other photo is of a 1956 Dodge Regent sedan with the Sportone treament that was standard on Canadian-built Regent, Mayfair, Savoy and Belvedere hardtops and optional on sedans and wagons. In the US I believe the trim was available only on the Belvedere. The Sportone trim could be ordered with or without the two tone treatment on non-hardtop models in Canada. Hardtop models had the two-tone paint as standard.

The interior on your car is original and the back cushion on the rear seat is the original fabric. The Dodge Regent used the same upholstery as the Plymouth Savoy.

I have never been able to figure why so many owners of 1953-1956 Chrysler products install the inside door handles sideways. The handle should be installed vertically, with the handle pointing down to the 6 o'clock position. Makes it easier to understand the directions given in the owner's manual where it states to push the door handle forward to lock the front doors from inside the car and pull back to open any door from inside.

You cannot push forward or pull back Having the door handle at the 9 o'clock position. Too many people looking at Fords and Chevrolets for tips on how to restore a Plymouth or Dodge, I suppose.

I just found this old thread while looking for something related to my car (also a 56 Dodge but an American one).

I have been in contact with fireguyfire (Todd) previously as well as John A. in Quebec. Both have 56 Dodge Regent 6 cylinder cars.

Todd's D60-2 = Regent 6 cylinder.

John sent me a photo of his body tag today so I jumped in and started to decode his paint and trim codes. His paint code was 1025 which turned out to be 10 = Jet black roof and side sweep and 25 = cherry red body. While I had the 56 Canadian Dodge and Desoto dealer trim and colour selection book out, I decided to try Todd's car which I knew to be pink and black, guessing in the absence of a photo of his body tag. Assuming that Todd's car had not been repainted, I guessed that the paint code would be 2910 where 29 = Shell Pink roof and sweep and 10 = Jet black = body. On that basis, I used the 56 Dodge and Desoto trim and paint selection book to create a "pre-purchase" image of Todd's car. See below. Now I know that my 2910 guess was correct.

As for interior, John's code was JAF which I could not figure out since the trim and colour selection book only has number codes. Based on his colours red and black, I thought his interior would either be Code 70 = grey on grey or Code 80 Pink on Black. I see from Todd's photos the build tag calls the trim "JCA" which I think in the Code 70, as shown below.

Well, its taken me a while to sort it out, but Chrysler of Canada used the three letter trim code through to 1963. The first letter, except for 1958, was for the Engineering Department model year code. Prior to 1955 the model year code was the only letter that was assigned. The second and third letters have nothing in particular assigned. At least so far. Could not figure out what colours JC* and JD* - one was grey and the other pink & black. Thanks to Dave, I was able to determine which one was which.

Except for 1958, the second digit of the 1955-1963 codes was the colour (colour was first in 1958) with the last letter for the series / body style. The colour assignments -
A - Green
B - Blue
C - Grey (1955-1956) / Cerise (a deep reddish pink) (1963)
D - Pink & Black (1956)
H - Black
K - Beige / Tan / Cocoa
L - Grey
S - Turquoise
T - Terra Cotta (1963)
W - Red

Was able to start sorting things out when I purchased the Colour / Trim pocket size (almost) book for the 196 Canadian-built Valiant. It has all the interior codes with the suggested exterior colours. And I went from there.

Colours were determined by checking the parts book for each year. The 1957-1963 listed the colours for carpets, sun visors, instrument panel pads, with the various trim codes connected to them.

This is not written in stone. I know I'm going to be dealing with corrections, so if there is anything wrong, let me know.

My father purchased a 1955 Dodge Regent 6 with Powerflite in 1958. The interior was green which, on a sunny day, reflected the light in such a way the windows appeared to be lightly tinted. The exterior was black (6000) roof with the rest of the car done in Coral Metallic (6016). (Code for this two tone - 6036) This Coral Metallic was actually more bronze than the shades normally referred to as coral.

One thing I would like to know, though, from owners of 1955-1956 Mopar / Chryco cars - (Plymouth and Dodge in particular) why are the interior door handles mounted like they were on a Chevrolet? If you check the interior shot of Todd's 1956 Regent the rear door handles are mounted horizontally instead of vertically. The handle should be installed straight down. Otherwise you cannot follow the instructions in the owners manual - to lock the front doors, push the handle forward. To unlock the front doors, or open any door, pull the handle back.

Bill: This is John A's 56 Regent 2dr hardtop 6 cyl that has the "JAF" interior code and the 1025 (Jet Black and Cherry red) paint code. I don't think that the black and cherry red exterior colours have changed too much so I have to question the "A" = green interior. It has been changed to a red velvet before John bought it so we couldn't confirm or deny the original interior. I was voting the greys or the pink/black.

This is the 1955 Dodge Regent 6 std that my father bought used (I still have the bill of sale) in 1956 when I was 5. By 1967, I was 16 and it became mine. It had a green vinyl/green starred cloth interior.

To answer your door handle question, both my 55 (that I owned from 1967 to 1972) and my current 56 American Dodge Custom Royal have the handles installed so they are at the "6 O'clock" position.

This is the closest that I could come with the 56 Candian Dodge and Desoto Paint and Trim dealer book. Jet Black and Shell pink - 1029 or Jet Black with Heather - 1028. The Heather is metallic and could be "bronze" (ish).

This color scheme you have posted here doesnt jive with my 56 CR Canadian

Which shows JAO for the trim code.
A - Green

That can't be right, as I have a light grey and black color scheme, there is no green anywhere in my interior.

Was known as interior Code 70 - Light Grey

Curious as to how you knew it was Code 70 and not some JXX code.
