I am doing a tuneup on my '58 Belvedere with a 318 and found that the timing marks are so worn that I can't read the lines on the balancer. Are there any good pictures available that would show the marks. I haven't been able to find any. I'm thinking that I could find TDC on NO.1 for a starting point but then I'm not sure which I need to go on the balancer to find the 10 degree before mark. Thanks in advance.

Well, the marks don't "wear off" as there is nothing wearing on them. The damper is in two pieces with vulcanization in between. Most commonly at this age, the outer has turned from its original position. Use classic method to find TDC on #1 and mark the damper but it will likely turn some more soon. There are shops who revulcanize.'

That timing degree tape is a good idea. The only way you can be sure the damper has turned on the rubber is to remove the front timing cover and line up the marks on the cam/crank gears. You will probably find the timing chain is worn and sloppy . Put in a new roller chain and gears. Without moving the crank, put the cover back on and the damper and see if the mark lines up with the pointer. If not get a new damper. Put the tape on again. Run the eng, and with a timing lite and a tach see where the advance is at in degrees on the damper. You can isolate mechanical from vacuum by removing the vacuum hose from the dist. You will find this not only interesting but educational. You will have a better idea of what the ign timing is doing when you move the gas pedal when you are driving. Jerry

you need to determine top dead center with a piston stop or a micrometer.

Yep, if in doubt determine TDC with a piston stop tool; you can make one from an old spark plug.
