Expert Posts: 3153 Location: NY & VT | Sold... to me... I got lucky, right time, right place, right price (lower than ad)! Really missed my previous '58 DeSoto 4 dr Sportsman, so now she has a successor. All that's needed now is to arrange the roll-back pickup. Car's better than advertised, the ad was super brief with few details, but turns out to be a Santa Clara CA car with 80k miles and a complete 361/TF drivetrain rebuild less than 1000 mi ago. She runs and sounds super sweet. I'm over the moon about my good fortune for this lucky find! Anyone want a good '59 sedan from Kansas... cheap! LOL BTW the seller said some Aussie called him up near midnight, he was not happy about that! He couldn't wait to take the ad down, he was getting bugged by so many calls. Elite Veteran,, James Passed away March 2021, He will be Missed Posts: 1028 Location: Melbourne, Australia | Great pick up Roger , I was the first caller so I believe and I was that midnight caller . It was actually 11pm , I would have bought it and paid paypal on the spot , but the guys wife started squealing and then he cracked it with me . If someone rang me at 3am to buy a car I would sell to them . I have to beg people to buy cars over here and give them away . Cant believe the attitude . I got the impression he wasn't going to sell it to me me after calling late, as he did say call again in the morning , but I doubt he meant it . As he said I don't think I can sell it to someone overseas , because in his mind it would be all too hard . I would have swooped it up as this definitely looked to be a west coast car by the looks . I studied every detail and a lot of things looked better the more I looked . Well optioned also with the roof package set , deluxe steering wheel (was green though) , fender ornaments , rear bumper guards , front bumper guards , dual ashtrays and 7 button radio I think also . You did well , that was a steal at even 8500 .

Expert Posts: 3153 Location: NY & VT | Thanks all - Mike - it'd look cool sitting next to your red '58 FireFlite convert! Don't think I'd drive it that far though! With health issues I couldn't go on to get the Windsor back on the road, but this one's already there, thankfully. Doug - 20 minutes from Endicott NY, car came from Santa Clara County CA, still has a sticker on the bumper. I hope to find who the selling dealer was. James - the bottom of the steering wheel is still green, because the car was originally Willow Green, quite unusual for a 2 dr hardtop. Looking forward to further interpreting the data plate. I actually would have preferred that color, and a 4 dr hardtop (weird, I know!) too, but I'm not complaining. Actually if I had the bucks I'd put it back to all original, except brakes etc. but given circumstances that's not likely, unless I win the lottery, guess I better start playing! The entire ad was basically: "1958 Desoto Firedome, runs, rolls, drives. Needs restoration". You could tell he wasn't a real FL guy, the ad didn't exactly inspire confidence... I think I would have mentioned California car, at least! Edited by firedome 2018-05-12 2:55 PM

Location: Parts Unknown | A guy came to me years ago with a 58 4HT .... don't remember if it was a Sweep or Dome, looking for direction on parts and tech help. The car was a stunning original willow green and black ! We talked on the phone here and there, and he'd come get bits from me, but it was some time before I saw the car again. When I did - and although he did not paint it "Compensatory Red" and white, He did paint over that awesome color combo with "Regret Blue" and white. Would have been the perfect trade you are looking for !

Expert Posts: 3153 Location: NY & VT | Willow and Black - Wow! That's a great combo! Think this one was Willow body & Spruce Green Iridescent (medium metallic green) top & sweep, another great combo! James, the only way I'd part with this car is to do a direct trade for an equally nice or better rust-free 57/58 4 dr hardtop in a color I like and features I want delivered to my door. Colors I prefer are classic late '50 pastels... pink, lavender, pale yellow, turquoise, &c. Otherwise someone will have to buy this car from my widow !

Elite Veteran,, James Passed away March 2021, He will be Missed Posts: 1028 Location: Melbourne, Australia | Roger , I guess lets all keep looking for that car you are looking for and if you or we do find it , I will happily be there to buy your car so the money is there . If it all doesn't work out its cool , just keep me in mind either way . If not enjoy the car as its a beauty , and willow green is my preferred colour as not many survive in that colour . For some inspiration I will upload a photo of a willow green car , (even if its a firesweep this one) Edited by The Adventurer 2018-05-13 9:39 PM (917.jpg) Attachments ---------------- 917.jpg (101KB - 140 downloads)

Expert Posts: 3153 Location: NY & VT | Decoding the data plate code XJX , the factory colors were , not the Spruce-Willow combo, but, according to it, Pearl White Body with French Turquoise Iridescent top and side sweep. But looking under gaskets and trim, it appears actual colors as delivered were: body in French Turquoise (which I mistook for Spruce metallic), and top and sweep in White. Either way a beautiful combo, and kinda wish it still were those colors, though most would, no doubt, prefer the present red & white. It is shining up nicely so far. Elite Veteran Posts: 769 Location: Oley, PA | XJX is: X = Upper (Roof) - Pearl White J = Lower (Body) - French Turquoise X = Sweep - Pearl White In my opinion, this is the best color combination available for that model. If it were mine, I would not hesitate to return it to this color. While the red/white may appeal to many, I have most recently seen cars with period colors such as the turquoise and white draw the most interest.
