Extreme Veteran Posts: 406 Location: Hilltown, PA | So, I'm collecting parts to do some maintenance/upgrades on the 361 in my 60 Desoto. While I'm about it I thought I would do the clean/paint/pretty thing as well, so I did a little research to find out what the original color scheme in the engine compartment would have been. It appears that the entire engine compartment (firewall, inner fenders, rad support) should be body color, and the entire engine should be silver, with various components (air cleaner, generator, brake booster, etc) in black. My car is white (cream actually) which is not the original color, and the engine compartment has been painted black. At some point in the future I might change the body color again (still not original) and also upgrade the driveline - if I do then I'll consider repainting the engine compartment body color at that time. For now though I'd like to paint the engine, and to be honest while the silver has some appeal as original, it really doesn't excite me. I guess it's my muscle car roots, but I tend to prefer engines in colors like red and orange and blue. I've seen Forward Look cars with the engines done in the Chrysler turquoise, and don't much care for it. I'm partial to either Hemi Orange, or even (God forbid) the brighter GM orange, but I feel like that's been a bit overdone. So I'm considering red, especially as it was popular on the performance engines in Chrysler products in the late 50's/early 60's, so while not "correct" at least it's "period". I also think it will have good "pop" in the black engine bay. I'm looking for opinions/suggestions. I know the purists will say silver, which I might consider if you can convince me there is a way to make it have some appeal. But I'm curious if anyone has any other thoughts/ideas/examples. Thanks Gregg

Expert Posts: 3155 Location: NY & VT | I'm in agreement that silver is kinda boring, but you could always leave the block silver, do valve covers in color, my '58 is like that with black valve covers, also sort of boring. I like red, also some mid '50s Packards had awesome copper & silver painted 374 V8s... different and really stunning in person! I'm pretty sure Plymouth wouldn't ship a basic all white four door post Savoy all they way from California to South Carolina. But since I wasn't there, anything is possible.
