So the fuel gauge on this Imperial is not working. It kinda works in that it raises up off the empty setting and bounces around near empty as you are driving, so I believe the sender is working, and the gauge is working, but I'm guessing the float on the sender is letting gas in and sinking.

Never worked on a gas tank before... how hard is it to replace one of these senders/floats in the tank? Does it require dropping the tank? Disconnecting fuel lines?

You can replace it while the tank is mounted. Will just require some turning and weird angles to get it to go back in/out. The float should be cork if original. The tank is mounted via J-bolts so you can give yourself a little more room by loosening them and let the tank drop a little. Making sure you line it all up correctly when tightened is the trickiest part. I would try and be sure it is the sender by removing it then grounding it to the vehicle with a jumper by attaching the jumper to the area where the ring holds it on the tank to clean metal on the car, connect the sender wire. Then turn the ignition on and manually work the float while watching the fuel gauge. It could be the float, gauge, installed sideways and stuck, or the sensor area of the sender that tells the gauge how much resistance is there.

If the issue is the float, I made a new float from two corks purchased at Lowes. If, in the end, you need a new sender, I think the PN is 1704 653. There is one one eBay.

Here is a pic of an original gauge (w/o the float but with rust). Note that there is a small filter at the end, often in bad condition. I replace it with the one you see ( from a paint gun). When i remove the original gauge (not this) i found a real cork but i don't thing it was a factory mount ...
The one on Ebay has a too short float arm.
